Feds promise $5.3M for 3 marine restoration groups on Vancouver Island

"The funding, announced Monday, is going to the Pacheedaht First Nation, the Guardians of Our Salish Estuaries and the Raincoast Conservation Foundation for work taking place both on the Island and the mainland.

Ottawa is sending the Pacheedaht First Nation just over $2.3 million over the next three years to restore three sites in the Gordon River and San Juan River estuaries near Port Renfrew.

Meanwhile, the Mid-Island based Our Salish Estuaries group is set to receive $435,000 over three years to “transform future salt marsh restoration efforts by modifying traditional fish trap techniques to restore and protect productive sedge marsh habitats,” according to the federal government.

Lastly, the Raincoast Conservation Foundation – which has offices in Sidney and a research lab at the University of Victoria – is receiving $2.62 million over three years to monitor and restore habitat along the Lower Fraser River and estuary."

Meanwhile incompetent and corrupt DFO wants to shut down the Sooke Chinook Sea Pen project!!! 🤬🤯😖😱😳

Unless you are a FN or NGO, good luck trying to find any support from DFO. They are just another corrupt incompetent political arm of govt. They need to be gutted and replaced!!!

Ask me if am am pissed about this!!! Members of the public fishery sector will have to fight hard to change this unscrupulous decision!

Musk says major fraud source in government-funded NGOs

What they're saying:

"This, by the way, is, I think, one of the biggest sources of fraud in the world, is government-funded nongovernmental organizations," Musk said.

"This is a gigantic fraud loophole where the government can give money to an NGO, and then there are no controls over that NGO," he continued.

"So, they have given billions of dollars. In fact, we estimate tens of billions of dollars to NGOs that are essentially scams," Musk added.

The billionaire entrepreneur suggested that $500 billion to $700 billion in waste needed to be cut, according to the Associated Press.

According to the AP, Musk’s estimate of fraud in entitlements significantly exceeds figures provided by watchdogs such as Social Security’s inspector general, who previously reported $71.8 billion in improper payments from fiscal years 2015 through 2022.

Last time I fished the San Juan I did see significant willow plantings on bars on the mid sections of the river. Don't know if they got blown out during the next flood. Until the raped hillsides up river can be stabilized to hold their water, I suspect much of the efforts are sadly fruitless.

Maybe in the USA there is accounting for funds in the DFO projects

It was trying to make a funny but it certainly rhymes with what we see. How here with some ENGOs.

Dont care.. Lets just deal with the problems in this country

Raincoast may have a, let's say, different opinion on recreational fishing than all of us on this site. BUT, their project on the Fraser River estuary is a highly valuable one. Reestablishing a connection to the estuary habitat most commonly used by Chinook salmon (but all species have been observed there) as they adjust to marine life is no doubt a win for Fraser River stocks. It's a pretty simple idea that requires a lot of money to construct the jetty breaches. Their monitoring has shown immediate results with observed use of the breaches and the newly accessible habitat as well. Smoltification (shifting from freshwater to saltwater stage) is one of the most physiologically stressful periods of the salmon life cycle and if we can provide them with a place to adjust from FW to SW at a more reasonable rate (aka the estuary), then we give them a greater chance of survival, at both the individual and population level. I think we should give them credit for that work! They won't want us to fish for them, but they're at least doing work to help improve the habitat and eventually create more returning fish.

I just think it’s a huge conflict of Interest to be a ENGO that does contracted restoration work but also is one that lobbies the goverment over their personal ideologies and how that all inter plays within their company.

They did the contracted work for the estuary’s but then also are the ones acting for government doing quality assurance on their own project telling us how good it’s working.

No doubt it’s good work but imo it’s messy

FYI DFO has a two branches responsible for this kind of work SEP every knows about but there is also one with engineering called

The DFO (Fisheries and Oceans Canada) Real Property, Safety and Security Branch (RP, Safety and Security) is responsible for ensuring the accommodation of departmental programs through the provision of real property, including jetties and wharves, and provides leadership and expertise in real property planning, strategic investment, divestiture, infrastructure life-cycle management, facilities maintenance, environmental management, and employee safety and security advisory services.

Instead of giving them money to do it, where they could put it out to tender and then provide oversight.

They instead decided to pay off the lobbyist aka raincoast foundation
