Critic questions federal cash for new coast guard base on East Coast

The federal government’s plans to spend 40-million dollars on a new coast guard base in Newfoundland has local stakeholders again asking… why not re-open Vancouver’s only base?

“The Kitsilano Coast Guard base…the amount of money that they are going to save, is probably equivalent to what they’re going to pay for office furniture in the new building in St. John’s.”

Unifor’s Allan Hughes says the West Coast seems to be suffering at the expense of boosting facilities on the east coast.

“Meanwhile on the BC coast we’re continuing to close stations, and reduce the number of boots on the ground and people monitoring shipping, when we handle half the shipping in Canada.”

Hughes also questions whether new promises are being made because it’s an election year.

Western Canada needs to separate!
I remember about 10 years ago I asked myself what I received from confederation. Here is what I concluded:

Pros:Every 4 years I get a kickass hockey team at the Olympics

Cons: Confederation has been a net drain on my pocket book since the day I first started paying income taxes about 40 years ago. During those 40 years, BC has been identified as a"Have" province (along with Alberta and for most of those 40 years also Ontario). Most of the other provinces during the same time frame were identified as "have-not" provinces and were the beneficiaries of provincial transfer payments from the haves to the have-nots. About 7 years ago, right after the latest US economic meltdown, Ontario quickly identified itself as a have-not province to make sure it was the recipient of some of those provincial transfer payments. I am not sure how long they remained a "have-not" or whether they are still on that list. About the same time Saskatchewan and Newfoundland were identified as Have provinces due to their wealth of natural resources.

What all this means is that financially, BC and Alberta have contributed more to confederation than all of the rest of the provinces combined.

So I guess I am asking what part of Canada do I really care about? East of the Rockies not much, but we need the prairies and the prairies need the coast, so what would be bad about a Western Canada that included everything West and North of the Ontario/Manitoba border?

Oh yeah, and we would still get a pretty kick-butt Western Canada Hockey team at the Olympics....

They can have their coastguard out east, but it should come with the Energy East pipeline that is becoming more and more of a reality, especially with NDP taking over Albertastan.

Same old story BC and Alberta, Saskatchewan and others getting raped for resources with little return for residents so Back East they can spend money on themselves. The political system in this country is corrupt. Even if we all got together and voted another party. Ontario, Quebec own the legislature. The seats are totally screwed. If the NDP gets a grip on Ontario/Quebec its over for Cons.

This is just another example to not vote for this party next election. This is just for reference since last adjustment under Conservative bill to add more representation across all provinces...

• Ontario: 121 seats and 36.12% of seats in House of Commons with 38.91% of Canadian population.

• Quebec: 78 seats representing 23.28% of seats in Commons with 23.22% of population.

• British Columbia: 42 seats and 12.54% per cent of seats in Commons with 13.31 per cent of population.

• Alberta: 34 seats and 10.15% per cent of seats in Commons with 11% of population.

• Manitoba: 14 seats and 4.18% of seats in the Commons with 3.64% of population.

• Saskatchewan: 14 seats and 4.18% of seats in the Commons with 3.08% of population.

• Nova Scotia: 11 seats and 3.28% of seats in the Commons with 2.75% of population.

• New Brunswick: 10 seats and 2.99% of seats in the Commons with 2.2% of population.

• Newfoundland and Labrador: 7 seats and 2.09% of seats in the Commons with 1.49% of population.
