Hey just a heads up to guy's selling stuff on market place. The new scam is for guys to want to buy your item they will tell you that they are away at the moment but will pick-up in a few days and want to send you an E-transfer. They send an E-transfer that looks legit but your first red flag should be that it doesn't auto deposit. The guy will tell you that he sent it from his business account which doesn't allow auto pay. Total ********, if you click the deposit now button on the e-transfer link it takes you to a fake interac website where it asks you to choose your bank. It then takes you to a fake bank website of your choosing where it then asks you to login. At this point they are steeling your bank access info.

Just heads up had two guy's try this **** with me today!

I had that yesterday. 2 very similar messages within seconds of posting the ad. Both were from South America. Away for a few days, say they'll e-transfer now if I hold it. I smelled BS right away and said "For you, cash only." Later Facebook posted a message saying this looks like a scam, but they were too slow. Someone could have already been had. Good on ya for posting this, we need to be aware.

A member of my family was scammed by this, and he is in the finance business! That just tells you how legit the scammer’s images look; exactly like your bank’s. Seconds after he entered his info, he woke up and phoned his bank. Banker froze his account, and told him to just change his password. Family guy asked, “don’t I need a new account number and card?” Banker said, “no, just change your password and you’re good. This happens all the time.”

Only accept e-transfers emails from notify@payments.interac.ca or via text that send you to an interac.ca website. Even then you have to be careful. I’ve done deals on marketplace using e-transfer and shipping but it requires a buyer’s full name and shipping address, and due diligence. Not recommended for anyone who isn’t fully tech literate and understands how to recognize online scams.
