I'm thinking the $199.95 might be right. I bought one from them in April for that price when they were on sale.

Been running these things now coming up on there 5th season for 2 with close to 100 days a year on there of them (got 4) now only ***** is the smaller handles but then im not normal on the size of my paws!!!! LOL LOL.

Every month or so I put a dap of reel oil on the cork and shes good to go and on the handles just basic stuff they still look new so cant complain for 400 plus days and there still going very strong

Had a buddy out the other day and he brought out his own rod and reel ill admit love the look of the MR3 (blue) but cant justify paying that kinda $$$$$.
After taking it to the plant to get "serviced" the thing still line creeps you can buy alomost 3 tyees for the price of a islander.
And it seems they really dont care as its been going on since they first came out??? weird

What do you think of the reel Slabby ?

I agree with Wolf above. I've got no complaints and love the reel other than I wish the handles were a bit bigger. I've never used an Islander so I don't have that comparison to make.

X3 on the reels, think they are fantastic. Have been using them for three seasons now with no issues, comparable to an Islander for sure just at a fraction of the price. You won't be disappointed with this reel thats for sure.

Only you can't convert them to left hand cranking...:( Therefore the MR3 is the only aluminum mooching reel that works for me.

Yeah, who wants to reel with their right hand? Not me. MR3 all the way.

Bday present.... never paid a cent for the reel... Love it but i have to admit that the trophy reels are smooth, hold their drag well, and they pack a lot of line... just spray paint it blue with all that cash you saved and you'll be happy bud! :D

Just got back from Berry's....he "had" about 2 dozen of the QR4.5 but already had a few walk out the door (and in the mail for one of the members here)....talking with the one guy with the white hair (I think Mike Berry?) he said to me "I better get some more of these in".

Had a buddy come out and we each picked up a nice Fenwick Mooching rod 10.5'....they were on sale as a "blow out" for $99 a pop or 2 for $159. All in all a good little set up me thinks for about $300.00 with backing and line spooled on. Lookin' forward to getting out there to try the new "toy". [8D]

Also gotta sit down and figure out greasing and oiling the reel...it's the first "aluminum" reel [:I] I have owned and apparently they come "dry".

Never tried one but would like to even though I am one of the Islander fans. I have three Islander MR 3’s and previously MR2’s. So far I have not experienced any drag slip problems. The price is not that high if you look around and you can get an MR3 new at River Sports in Campbell River for $450.00 (at least when I was last up there a few months ago). Occasionally I have seen them on sale for less. A good used one goes for about a hundred dollars less, they hold their value.
Because I live in Victoria close to the Factory, I just drop them off and pick them up if they need a tune up or repair and the service so far has always been excellent and without charge. Barry is great and it’s the kind of service that builds loyalty, not dissimilar to the loyalty that Scotty has built with their downrigger repair service. If you live on Vancouver Island there is a lot to be said about having factory service close by. They are also very forgiving reels for beginners since the infinite drag system makes it unlikely they will over tighten the drag when the fish is taking a long run.

well I got my reels. I rigged them with 300 yards of 50# tuff line and 100 feet of 35# maxima mono at the end. I used them today at the hump, seem to be ok, a little heavier than I expected but seem to be nice and smooth. I think Im gonna shorten the mono to 50'. Very sensitive drag, will take getting use to. Im use to backing the drags off on my other reels so I did this yesterday with the new ones.Anyway, the spoon came loose and by the time I realized it, the spoon was about 300 yards behind the boat. Good thing I discovered it in time, could have been ugly.

Has anyone found a solution to replace the handles on these? I'm partial to the larger flat handles like on the old Daiwa 375s.

Yes I tried and worked out great got a set of islander handles and was able with a dremel do a taper on the inside for the set screw. problem is trying to get posts and handles are tough as hell if anyone knows of a way let me know. As id like about 6 sets to finish off what I started.

Just put a couple of days in on my new one. I agree the drag is quite sensitive and you gotta keep an eye on it.

Other than that I am pretty happy.......the reel is nice and smooth and when you have a rookie fighting a fish with it, it's nice that you can't really get a boars nest on the reel with a running fish. Well at least not thus far. My GF does it quite often with my Shimano reel but thus far it's been "uneventful" with the Trophy.
