I've grabbed some of those in the past. Not the greatest for detail though.

Also, they are tricky to set up due to the copy protection/serial numbers they use. Some work - some don't.

I've never tried to load one onto a GPS though, so I don't know how well that would work. I've only used them on my computer.

I now have my Navionics chip and an older version of NavPlanner that works OK, but is a bit buggy. In order to upgrade it I would have to buy everything including the highly priced special card reader. I wrote them an email telling them to stuff it. I bought and paid for the buggy version - I shouldn't have to pay full price and buy hardware I already have just to upgrade to the new supposedly less buggy upgrade version. :(

This is another situation where the Chretien Liberals shafted the people of Canada when they gave a monopoly on Canadian electronic charts to ONE company. We pay double what they do in the US, and get buggy charting systems.

Lost me on that one, Canada has over 800 distributors/vendors for their electronic charts?

As far as I know, U.S. and Canada make their own marine charts. The U.S. has put them in public domain, while Canada has very much limited theirs requiring permission (and royalties) for business applications. Canadian Hydrographic Service digital charts are BSB Raster And S57 ENC, same – same as U.S. and pretty much the same prices from the different manufactures. The information on all the charts are the same, just their individual programming is proprietary.

Btw… Navionics is an Italian Company and Garmin is out of the Cayman Islands.

Charle:

My info may be a little dated.

During the '90's the Chretien Liberal government gave all rights to make electronic charts to one company. At that time their cost was at least double the cost of similar US charts from other companies.

I beleive that the monopoly no longer exists, but to be honest, I have not kept track of it in recent years.

On the plus side, Navionics chips for all of BC are now cheaper than the old Vancouver Island chips were a few years earlier.

Just curious - Has anyone here purchased the new version of NavPlanner? I'm curious as to how well it works.

I have the new Navplanner 2 and it works great. It's a Navionics product but actually programed by Fugawi.
