Donation question

:)I'm from below the border but, I fish your neck of the woods when I can so I donate every year to your salmon recovery programs. I believe the Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society is O.K. but, I been giving also to the Pacific Salmon Foundation. Does this organization really help out the salmon runs? I always seem to have a tough time finding salmon enhancement organizations on the west side of Vancouver Island. I do my yearly fishing trip out at Ucluelet BC but, there's nothing over there to contribute to except the Robertson Creek hatchery. Only problem is their run by the DFO and won't take donations. Appreciate if any of you fisherman can enlighten me or suggestions as to where I should donate. Thanks..

Hiroshi-- we have quite a network of community volunteer salmon enhancement programs in BC. And they CAN accept donations with gratitude as they are being strangled by govt funding cuts.
Check out http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/sep-pmvs/directory-repertoire/Community_Inv_Directory_09_10.pdf

And give the project or area Community Advisor for the area that you are interested in helping, a call or email. Also , the PSF is well worth donating to as well, they directly support larger research projects as well as local enhancement volunteers.

hiroshi, good on you for giving back to the areas you love to fish. Nice to hear of people helping out there neighbors.

Hiroshi,

-Your approach is very much appreciated, and as C.L. mentioned, all donations are important and welcomed as our DFO/Enhancement people at the source are being strangled by either funding outlines and cutbacks.
PSF is very worthy of your donations, and closer to the source of your Ucluelet fishery is the Thornton Creek hatchery. The people at Thornton Creek have shared a shoestring budget with Tofino Salmon Enhancement Society for years, and do an amazing job within very tight finacial limits..

Richard Smith at Thornton Creek would be glad to hear from someone like yourself.

I second that opinion. Thornton Creek does indeed make the absolute most of what they have, and that has become damn little! They really could use an infusion to help with their tremendous efforts!

Good On You for Giving Back! [^]

Cheers,

Okay, I "THIRD" that!

If you don't want to go there... I would do "Tahsis" or "Sooke"!!!

Thanks guys but, I know about Thornton Creek Enhancement Project. It's run by the DFO and I'll run against the same problem I did with Robertson Creek Hatchery. Seems you can't donate to a DFO run hatchery. I had to make a personal check out to the directory of Robertson Creek and he used it as though fit. I had to insist. I think I'll give to the Pacific Salmon Foundation and when I go up to Ucluelet BC, I'll bring my bike and go to Thornton Creek and see if they will take a cash donation on the spot for the personal working there. This is a bummer. Sooke was easy. Such is life. Thanks again guys for the input.

Thornton Creek Hatchery is a Community Economic Developement Project (CEDP) hatchery, not a DFO hatchery. It is contracted by DFO and I assuming they would accept a donation.

Saying that, the Pacific Salmon Foundation is an excellent place to donate, they fund lots of projects up and down the island.

Great to hear Hiroshi!!

I belong to the Nicomekle Enhancement Society here on the mainland and damn straight PSF helps! We just recieved a grant through PSF to finish our ops center as well as construct a Much Needed new hatchery building.
That is such a good thing to hear of someone not from the area they frequent to give back to the resource that they share in!

By the way...any of you mainlanders looking for something to do on a Sunday morning...when you're not fishing of course...we are always looking for new members! It is a good way to give back...I like to think it puts me in the fish god's good graces...LOL.
Besides they are a good bunch of guys.

Cheers,
