dogfish question

first off i did a thread search nothing conclusive. 2 mays ago I made the trip out from ontario to go bear hunting around pt renfrew. My resident brother jammed me on the bear hunt i even though i paid for the permit to accompany. Dont know if anyone remembers that april may there were a bunch of springs getting caught well that gave my mainland bro a fish boner and we ended up fishing for the 4days i was down there....oh yah the springs moved thru lol no salmon for ontario guy. boo hoo me right but to stay focused on my thread i did catch a dogfish which i thought was pretty cool being a smallmouth, catfish pickeral guy from the east. I released it and when we got back to the marina people asked us how we did and then asked if we killed the dogfish. Lots of people have a hate on for these things, just did a youtube search, watched some vids and there were lots of neg comments about them there too. How come people dislike these things so much, other than being west coast ignorant what am I missing? help me see the light. Loved my trip by the way crabbing prawning camping , oysters.....hope you guys realize how lucky you are living where you do.....i just watched a picnic table float by in the spring run off in my ****** little river across from my house ...ah ontario.

good post wicket, love hearing people come out west and have some fishing fun!

dogfish...they are hated because they can become pests, trying to fish for salmon or halibut and get endless dogfish -- stealing bait and fouling your gear (not fishing while dealing with them).

they are edible, but need to be prepared right to be eaten -- something about them peeing through their skin, so need to wash the meat in vinegar, base vs acid, or something like that. Not many around here eat them, but around the world they are a staple .... most fish n chips in UK is "rock salmon", which is dogfish/mudshark. I understand they are overfished in a lot of places to the point that they are considered an endangered species ... not around here though.

ah i guess that makes sence then. I love in in BC that was my first trip to the island and love it as well. I ate so many raw oysters one night by the fire i thought i may just puke and you know what id do it again. was planning on another trip this may but the transmission went on my truck 2300.00 700.00 for car repairs and there goes my bc money. I am a public works leadhand in my hometown and guide duck hunters in the fall for my buddy at his private club so my fall trips are hard to do and the spring thing seems to be the ticket. Im only 40 and in exactly 13yrs 5 months 22 days i will be retired and hopefully my body will still be functional enough to move west. until then ill take it 2 weeks at a time.

Gosh wicket, it seems you got lucky with the weather and found some non toxic Oysters during your visit here. Are you sure you want to move here with all the rain, expensive ferries, expensive everything etc? it is rare that we get any decent weather and the fishing is way exaggerated, besides we are kinda full up now and as soon as i get my tongue outta my cheek i will find some more bad news for ya........pssssst, if you do decide to move here tell all your friends that it was a mistake and you wish you had never done it. Heh Heh

we had some stupidly good weather...2days of rain the rest was sunny and warm. never had a good window to make it out to the bank with my bros 18 harbour craft. I will move west at some point mainland or island....southern ont is an armpit. i need to live in a place where i can take my bow or rifle out and just go....if you do outdoor sports here (hunt fish) its like you are a member of a secret society. anyways yah I hate living here....did i mention i live on the same st i grew up on....711 steps from the house i grew up in......working for the town i grew up in, driving the same streets ive done for the 40 yrs of my life seeing the same toothless residents and the same pregnant teens walking with their brotherhusbands day after day after day......wheres my scotch............on a positive note at least I dont have any sistersbabymommas to support. I think each year I live here I get stupider through osmosis. In fact the other day I knew I was close rock bottom when I asked my wife if the sweatpants I had on were clean enough to go out for dinner and by dinner I mean the A&W drive thru. I knew I had hit rock bottom when I sucked the mustard I spilled on them off the knee so I could get another week out of em before I had to do a wash.

where from ontario are you from?

Hi Wicket, great thread! If you have been reading some of the posts about the issues with halibut fishing maybe you could start rattling some chains out there. We could use some voices out there. If you plan on moving out to BC it would be good to start helping us to protect ours and your future fishing rights as they are being severly eroded.

i have been following the halibut debacle and Ill gladly fire off a letter and make some calls to my mp. both take almost no time and really just how much **** can a guy watch online? I dont have those numbers yet but surely i can find the time inbetween my research to get them done. Seems like any natural resourses department in the country is seriously flawed whether its due to special interest groups or underfunding. good idea gunsmith regardless of where I live I do spend a lot of time and money in BC and right is right. thanks

Larger dog fish can have a high mercury content, do not eat them. They all urinate through their skin, marinate them with milk if you want to eat one. They chew and wreck your gear. They are a **** fish, you will find it hard to find a good dogfish comment from a salmon fisherperson.

And don't forget that spine near the tail that they're always trying to stab with with.

An old friend of mine rented a boat from Sewell's the first week he came here from Nova Scotia back in the 70's-caught a Dogfish/got stabbed/ended up being treated by a Doctor and carries the nasty scar to this day.

I tried one as bait for my crab trap and when I pulled it I had 14 in one trap! They must love dogfish.

I was at a lodge last year where a 244lb hali was brought in by one of the other guides. We opened up the stomach on it and it had 3 large octopus beaks as well as 6 dogfish spines, might be a good hali bait? Ive never gone out of my way to try it.

I try to release every one that I catch, I figure they were here long befor people and will be here long after we are gone.
They must be here for a reason, we can't just keep killing everything just becaus we can.
I have eaten one that I couldn't release and they are surprisingly good.

I'm with you Betty i try and release all of them as well, i figure one day i might be doing dogfish charters.
The 150lb haly a caught yesterday had a 3 ft doggy in it's tummy. So there down there for a reason.

I caught a 95 lb. hali at Constance last year and it had two small dogfish in it's stomach, still quite intact. I had a larger haly a few years before at the Race that had several ratfish in it's stomach. When they're hungry hali will eat whatever is available.

...Rob

theres a really good documentry called SHARKWATER explains how important they are i also hate them though when im trying to catch salmon or halibut if we get them halibut jigging we move at least a mile and if we catch them salmon trolling its because we're going to slow
