DFO 2008 escapement and creel surveys

Anyone read the DFO/SFAB publication on escapement and creel surveys ?
Very scary stats gentlemen , some surprises in level 1 river escapements already in the streams , but overall not much brood stock compared to say 7 to 12years ago , the halcyon days are over it appears.

Well, I have maybe some better news: The Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society made a first attempt to collect chinook brood stock today. After only 12 chinooks altogether last year the hopes were down. But we got 42 nice springs with about 16 females. The society will try a few more times over the next few days and it might be not so a bad year after all - the most they ever got in good years was 150. And not only the numbers were good today - I have seen the biggest springs alive today for myself - there were several in the 50 lbs range and lots between 30 and mid 40's. When you consider that they probably lost already 10 lbs due to a couple of weeks not eating then you know how big they were before! I had no idea that the Sooke River has such beauties! And the Cohos which were released today and left for a later collection date - lots in the 20 lbs range and quite a few well over 20 lbs I would guess! Quality fish I would say! Maybe signs of better years to come! Let's keep them coming!

Caught tons of Springs in the 35-45lbs range this year...plus loads of huge Coho...Pops caught and released one he said had to be at least 24lbs...monster!

better chinook returns to nitinat hatchery,will hatch about 3.2 million chinook eggs this year,also big coho starting to show up also
