Close call with Suzuki 140

Had a close call with one of my 2005 Suzuki 140 outboards, after returning last week from Browns Bay I was doing a regular check of the engines when I was shocked at the state of my port side engine oil. With just over three hundred hours on them I was taken back at the thought of having to replace a head gasket due to milky/creamy oil on the stick, I contacted a Suzuki dealer explaining what I found and was told that I was looking at a 10-11 hour job plus parts. We fished for five days and the engine never missed a beat or tripped any codes or lights so I was angry at the thought of such a serious issue. Long story short after explaining my findings to the head tech at Parksville boat house he suggested I check my thermostat and see if it was stuck open which could cause the engine to be running to cool and over fueling causing a rich scenario and turning my oil to chocolate milk. Well I had a large smile on my face when I removed the thermostat cover and found it stuck in the wide open position. I installed a new thermostat, flushed the engine oil three times added a new filter and took her for a good run on the chuck. Big Big thanks to the boys at PVBH who pointed me in the right direction and saved me a large amount of time and money.

Those pictures were taken after fishing for three days, I checked the oil before the boat was put in the water and everthing was great, thats why I was so shocked when I pulled the stick once I arrived home.

I had the same experience with my 2006 Yamaha BF90 this summer. Had been checking the oil on a daily basis for a long time, but there was never any change, so I got complacent and did not pull the cowling for 4 days.

When I checked again, the oil level was way up and the oil was milky like in your pictures.

Replaced the stuck open thermostat, and changed the oil - back to normal.
