Chrome Scotty Rocketlauncher Rodholders

nope I wouldn't.... I said when those came out bad design. You have taken plastic tube that can flex and made it rigid, and then never changed your mount design at all. Which in my opinion was a total mistake. That force needs somewhere to go so you now have increased stress/torsion on that joint. I believe the length of tube is more as well so there is your answer.

So what happens is more stress on the tube and surprise it snaps. This was on forum last year with guys that were running offshore deep. Get strikers Christoph way better... Why are you changing your mounts?

Hey guys, do you think that these would hold up hali fishing? I am a little concerned that during a heavy hit it could snap the plastic mounting pin that sits in the flush mount. Here these are the ones I mean: http://www.scotty.com/fishing-gear-equipment/rod-holders/RocketLauncher.htm

They work fine, just don't set your drag to firm.

The only scotty plastic mount that has ever snapped on me was the plastic ring around the SS down rigger arm that holds the rood holder.

When Hali fishing, I had a friend adjust my rod drag and he pushed the lever full forward to full tension. The hali hit and no line released from the rod and snap the scotty bracket snapped and the rod and reel went over and down to the bottom. 5 minutes later the center rod got a dog fish so we brought it up and there was my line wrapped around the spreader bar, untangled it and pulled up my rod and reeled in a 48lb hali.

Just have your reel adjusted correctly.

I use the strikers as well and even reel the halibut up in them... to easy... and have tethers tied to reels as well....

I know the strikers are good but I need a holder that does not leave the rod butt inside the boat - the mount is so close to the seat that it would make sitting there uncomfy. I wish they had a metal mount for these rocket launchers. Maybe I can get a couple fabricated from SS to match the scottys. I was thinking along your lines as well Doug. If the drag is adjusted properly it shouldn't be an issue. But then again, I sometimes fish with Deewar as you know....lol

Strikers are the best choice for Hali fishing. They have a ss support pin up the middle of the post that goes into the base.

the first production of those scottys had issues breaking while trolling and if you were lucky enough and had your line burried deep into the scotty
line release clip you would get your rod and islander back,
scotty was aware of this and they are now made with an impregnated fiber strand that makes them a whole bunch stronger (cant remember the % they told me) but I now have a bunch of new ones on board and they are much stronger

Well funny to read the above thread, it sure got my attention.

We had an "interesting experience" Saturday. Sipping on beers just trolling along thrasher aera, then BAM then Splash!!!

Couldn't figure out whats up at first. Then look around.
WTF !!! Uhm.
One less rod now.
Scotty Stainless Rod holder snapped at base and everything went over.
Shut down motor. Pulled up rigger. Main Line still clipped in. Start pulling in 160' of line and there's my rod and reel. Would have been a 300 $ loss.

Definitely will be contacting Scotty for replacement of one rocket launcher rod holder that's at bottom on Georgia Straight, and 4 new type posts so this doesn't happen again with much more costly results.

Thanks for the info Hookin-Up

CHECK YOUR ROCKET LAUNCHER POSTS

Next chapter...

See my earlier post about broken RH post.

So I called Scotty and explained what happened. It took a bit of talking to convince Scotty to replace the lost rod holder and post. Then it took more explaining to get the other 3 posts replaced to the newer, stronger type. (I bought two PropPak DR kits with 2 RH each). They finally agreed and told me my parts were in the Que to be sent out whenever. OK, I think, I still want to go finishing so I went out following Saturday. After setting up Down Riggers and old rod holders I Drop lines down and sit back waiting for a fish. Then I think, well if one broke last week, what is the probability of another one breaking this week. I inspect the two that I am using and one has big crack in it, ready to break just like the one that broke previous week.
WTF? this is a big problem. I switch out the cracked one with my 3rd one that I wasn't using at the time.
No further events but 2 out of 4 posts breaking!!!!
Replacing Rods, Reels, line and terminal gear would be costly!!!

Yesterday, Just as I was about to call Scotty to see if my parts had being shipped, a box from Scotty shows up at my office. Open it up and has newer posts which are much hardrer plastic and I assume stronger.

All good now but be aware. Replace those older posts before you have a rod go overboard

I realize this is an older post however maybe it will save others from losing their favourite rod and reel which happened to me yesterday when my Scotty chrome holder snapped like described above. If you've got one be careful. I will be contacting Scotty to see about the newer ones. It also happened about a month ago however that time I grabbed the rod just in time. I figured it was a one off. Now I know it wasn't!!

How can I tell if the ones I have are the older or newer style. I bought 2 about a year ago.

I called Scotty today and they are sending me new bottom "pins". They said the newest ones have strands in the plastic making them stronger. Perhaps ask when the change was made. Could save you some grief. For me I shoulda paid more attention as another one snapped a month ago.
