While things get heated up in the PH thread, I thought I would take the opportunity to thank Jay in Tofino for going out of his way to answer questions, draw spots on my charts to try on every type of tide, and to top it off he told me which of his guide boats to follow and what time they were leaving the dock. (I passed on his tempting offer, preferring to fumble around on my own). Sure I bought some stuff in his shop, but he and his staff went above and beyond so he will get my recommendation for anyone that asks me about chartering or where to get gear. Even though I didn't catch much until I could get offshore in a bigger boat, I will be returning just for the challenge of doing better next time.
On the same note, any of the guides along the dock in Ucluelet I've ever talked to are always willing to offer a tip or two, including fairly specific locations. Guides in Sooke have also been helpful both on the dock and the water (eg. one guy I passed by closely told me to continue working the tack I was trying until a certain time/tide and sure enough, I got a fish right on schedule). Same thing at Moutcha Bay and Telegraph Cove.
It seems to me that if a person is in the sportsfishing business, growing the sport and the economy of his town has to be an important consideration even if it doesn't put immediate dollars in his pocket. Plus it's good Karma. There really is no way most of us will outfish pro guides, so throwing us a bone will do them more good than harm in the long run.
