Care and lubing an Aluminum Reel

Hi Guys,

I have always just run Shimano reels and just got one of the Trophy Reels today. I understand they come "dry" and was just curious about the oiling/greasing of the reel. I know I oil the bulk of the inside of it and am I just greasing the "outer" part of the interior of the reel to help keep the water out....(kinda like a sealant) or is there another area I should be greasing? I am sitting here looking at the piece of paper that comes along with the reel (basically just diagram of all the parts and the "part name").

Thanks for anyone can lend a bit of "know how".

I did buy the "Super Lube Sportsmans Kit" as I understand that is what Islander recommends....or at least that is what I was told.

Actually may have just found my answer on the Islander website.

•Use fresh "Superlube" oil to lube any moving parts and to coat springs and pivot points.
•Apply "Superlube" oil sparingly to clutch cork surface. The cork should be wet but not dripping wet.
•Apply "Superlube" grease to clutch teeth and bearing seal recesses and also to drag knob washer and spindle threads.

Yep, superlube is this stuff to use. I always rinse my islander with fresh water after each use. But make sure you tighten the drag all the way to keep water out. Then also loosen the drag right off when you're not using it.

Enjoy!

A few things I have learned with Islanders which are probably applicable to your reel.
1. Don’t store your reel on the rod.
2. Don’t use it with a rod that has metal reel seats. The metal on metal damages the anodising and salt water causes electrolysis corrosion of the reel foot
3. Rinse the reel by sloshing it around in a sink of cold fresh water after each days use in salt water. Warm water dissolves the lubricants.
4. From time to time, depending on use and at the end of the season, completely disassemble the reel. Clean it completely, reassemble and lube it. On an Islander don’t forget to add the dry graphite power to the oil when you work it into the clutch face as per Islander’s instructions.
5. If the Rod holders have places that may rub on the reel, scratching it or removing the anodising, I use clear duck tape on the reel’s ware sensitive spots. It works as temporary armor to protect the reel finish and is close to invisible. Remove it for occasional cleaning and for winter storage and it is as if it was never there.
I have found good Aluminum reels to be high maintenance but worth it.

If it's the body of the reel you want to protect use Boeshield or Fluid Film.

Hey dogbreath....thanks for the info. I assume you just use this as a spray for the outside housing of the reel? I don't know that I "have to have" this as I am pretty good about rinsing down my gear each day....I would be more concerned about scratching the reel up too badly but heck....it's a fishing reel not an ornamanet for my mantle.;)

Do you know anywhere in "our" neighborhood that sells it?

Hey Pippen,

How do you like the Trophy reel ?

Thus far it looks really pretty! ;) All in all though I like the feel of it; it also seems to be a bit larger than an Islander but I don't have one to compare it to side by side and haven't had one in my hands for about 2 weeks. Seems pretty solidly built though? If anyone was hoping it had a similarish (nice word) colour to the gold Islander as it kind of looks like on the website, it is more of a greyish/dark pewter colour; not quite 'gun metal' but definitely more greyish than gold/brass. It may not be so "solid" after I take it apart to lube and grease it...but hopefully my "Rubik's Cube" skills will help in figuring this one out. ;)[:p]

I really can't complain about the deal in it though....the reel, a Fenwick HMX rod, 300 yards of 30lb Maxima and 100 yards (I think) of backing for basically $300.00. [8D]

I haven't had a chance to try it yet but hope to get it out next week for a whirl and a test drive before I head to Kyuquot and hopefully Nootka if we can swing it before.

I may just go pick up another one as even if I don't like it, I am sure I can sell it for what I would pay for it during the sale. I may put the Shimano/Convergence set up's into the role of "backup/spare". But if guys like Wolf give it accolades after as much use as he puts em' through I am sure I won't be disappointed.

Just in case anyone was curious.....regarding the handle size. I don't have huge paws but thought I would send an e-mail to Redl Sport to see about larger handles; and they don't have anything they specifically make for Trophy's. I don't know if the thread would work for swapping in some Shimano handles at all? I changed up the handles on my 4000's last year and do like the newer ones I put on that ARE slightly larger.

Cheers,

Yes it's just a coating.

Lordco has it, NAPA Auto Parts, maybe the Canadian-Tire-From-Hell on Cambie as well.

Part # 3300 IIRC.

I just tried exchanging my Shimano handles on my Trophy. It would screw in just fine but the Shimano handles wouldn't roll with your fingers while reeling and were stationary (I hope that makes sense). I'm not quite sure why that is. I think this would cause the screw to just back out eventually which obviously isn't good. I've gotten used to the smaller handles and it's fine but if someone has a way to get bigger handles on the Trophy I would up-size them. Has anyone out there ever successfully changed out the handles on the Trophy's to larger ones??

Slabby...I would probably guess that the screw on the Shimano handle isn't long enough to go all the way in to the spool and tighten while leaving just enough space between the handle and the spool to allow it to 'spin'. I am sure it's just the depth of the 'hole' and ya....I agree you wouldn't want to do that unless you were going to use a "lock-tight" type product to seal the handle/screw at just the right depth. Me thinks........not such a good idea. ;)

Hopefully I made sense. [8D]
