Cool! [8D]

Great pics and a wide decision in more ways that one-I can imagine dragging that thing over the railing of a small boat like that.

Thanks Holmes!

Great fish, great story and great photos!

What more could you want from a days fishing?

As an aside, When I guided for Eagle Pointe Lodge (Dixon Entrance), we often found Halibut with several Pink Salmon heads in their bellies when the seine fleet was vacuuming up the Pinks.

Slabs of Pink Salmon on a circle hook were the prefered Hali bait at the lodge.

Well I finally got around to coming on here and checking things out. As far as the fish goes, yes it was pretty amazing and a no brainer as far as releasing it goes. I certainly don't need 200 lbs of halibut meat so the only benefit to keeping it would have been a picture out of the water instead of in the water, and the millions of eggs are not nearly worth it.

To measure it, my dad grabbed the spreader bar and pulled the fish flat on the surface while we held a rod along side it. One person lined the butt of the rod up with the snout while the others marked where fork of the tail met along the rod. We did this three times to make sure it was a consistent measurement. She came out to 81" or 6'9", corresponding to 287.8 lbs on the chart.

The release went really well. I was worried the hook would be buried in her throat but it wasn't. I was using a single large treble and two of the prongs were in her upper cheek, far shy of her gills. No blood to be seen or any of that stuff. We considered grabbing a long pair of needle nose and trying to shake the hook but from what we've read, its better to let the hooks rust out, so we cut the line and away she went. Picture never do it justice but here's a couple anyways:

Anyways, I appreciate all your cudos' and it seems that I earned a little good karma with this release. The season has started off really well including a 40 yesterday morning, along with a 29, 23, and 20. I sure hope this is an accurate indicator of how this season is going to be.
