They might want to check their frigates and destroyers for some kind of high powered magnetic powers as they seem to attract the bows of nearby ships lately.

two captains will now be looking for a new job. zero tolerance in the US Navy for any collisions, period.

Sad! Don't forget the enquiry will take at least five years and cost the taxpayer at least 10 million!!

Not sure about both captains...as this was a towing exercise where one vessel pretends to be dead in the water and the other approaches to get a line on her. The destroyer was playing the part of the vessel without power. Hard to blame this Captain as it would be to blame someone who gets rear ended while stopped at a red light.

The algonquin was the tow boat, protecteur was the "dead" boat. They have to come pretty close to get lines across, apparently this time they were close by -3m or so. The hangar on the algonquin is aluminum and pretty light, the damage looks way worse than it actually is. It is a mess but not really a huge deal to be honest. The fish boat that went full rack and ran into the winnipeg did way more damage. The protecteur needs some paint and call that old girl good to go.

You got it right, GnB. Who was whom and the extent of damage.

These are warships aren't they? They're built to be abused, right? Send 'em back out on the exercise and tell the international partners as LR suggested, "Tis but a scratch. You should see the other guy."

The news report I read had the Algonquin as the dead boat...typical news stories.

This is somewhat ironic in that about a week or so back there was a lot of radio traffic on 68 and then I think 72 in JDF that went on for hours between Protecteur and two other vessels. Apparently the two other (I assumed commercial vessels) had a collision and both were seriously damaged including fire in engine room, major flooding, and injuries on both ships. The Protecteur was the responding ship and the Captain was on the radio advising he had launched his helicopter etc. Also Ribs with damage control parties, equipment etc.

What was strange was that the radio traffic seemed to be between Protecteur and the two ships, but not radio traffic from the Coast Guard/rescue center. Made us wonder if it was a navy training exercise or a real emergency, especially since the media did not seem to pick up on it as a major story which one would think it would have been.

It sounded like a real emergency but if it was a training exercise why would they not use closed Military channels rather than working marine radio channels? Did not hear any notice that it was an exercise only and it sounded real.

Certainly ironic in light of the Protecteur being involved in a collision some days later.

Anyone else hear the radio traffic or know anything about this?

The Canadian Forces are in a sad state of affairs - especially the Navy, with all the recent accidents?; bad purchases (subs), antiquated machinery and obsolete helicopters, oh lets not forget the new fighter jet proposal.
Perhaps we should abolish the senate and use the extra cash to protect Canada's Coastlines...

I noticed last time i was flying out of Comox on the westjet that there was a couple f-18 fighter jets in hangers at the north end of the runway, does anyone know if they will finally have a fighter jet squadron based out of Comox? i was told before that if there was a threat to the coastline the jets had to be sent from Cold Lake Alberta, maybe they are making room for the new JSF's??

No-- the FA 18s still are based in Cold Lake. They use Comox as an auxiliary base only.

The Hornets are there for Threat Interception purposes along the west coast and work out of the ready hangers in Comox.

Just a flesh wound .

Ya the navy is cutting costs so i herd they are just going to get Alcan to make an extra big roll of aluminum foil to cover the scrape .. looks about the same thickness as what the used in the first place.

The Canadian Forces practice dangerous things including deadly force daily. That is their "Raison D'Etre" and miscalculations will happen. They used to practice low level flights with a a jet that was a high altitude interceptor, CF 104 also called "The Widow Maker" Candian forces have excelled at doing these type of actions and yet we hear few if any compliments. The media is nothing but a bunch of Hyenas and do not deserve the attention they get.

ever been in desolation sound when one of these jets rips over head? unreal, looks like they are less than 100' off the water sometimes... ya dont hear em comin sometimes because of the valley's then all of a sudden BOOM and gone.. AWESOME!!!!
