Campbell River Advice

Hi All,

New to the site as a member (but have been following it for a while). Lot of good info here!

I'm going to be taking my boat up to Campbell River in August for the first time and had some questions on how you fish the area. I'm mostly familiar with the Straight of Jaun de Fuca area, dragging herring behind a flasher using down-riggers. Is this how you fish the Discover Passage area too? If so, are the fish particular to whole or cut-plug? Do they hit spoons (Coyotes)? Any suggestions for what works during the first part of August (9-13) would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Mike

Hi Mike
We don't fish any kind of meat cause the effen dogfish and grey cod will drive you crazy. As far as tackle, most people around here go with flashers and hootchies. Blue meanie, army truck haze, jack smith pulled behind a green flasher. Some guys use spoons and some use plugs and they all seem to work at one time or other. Check your charts for a hump south of cape mudge and fish around it a couple of hours each side of high slack. Good luck.

Along the same vein,
when the sockeye are running what is the protocol at Brown's Bay. Fishing currents can be problematic and with dozens (hundreds?) of boats is there a right and wrong way to fish there? I have fished the Alberni canal lots and am wondering if any different,

Thx in advance

RM

I would suggest motoring up north a bit and hitting Browns Bay, chatham, greensea.... There are some very particular hoochies that work very well in this area and have local nicknames (jack smith, blue meanie etc). Rolling anchovies is an option as well, cut plugging isn't very popular but probably still works too if that's what you like doing. Fishing the correct tide in each location is very important.

Thanks for getting me pointed in the right direction! I've got a little time yet to do some more research, but this helps!

Browns Bay that time of yr for sure, usually you can target almost every salmon then, pinks, soxs, springs. You can fish Deep Bay,Browns,Plumper or Greensea if you want to run up there. Chatham is another option Im sure if you read previous threads theres lots of info tides and such. Good luck enjoy yourself and maybe will see u around.
