Camble River fun.

Well we were fortunate enough to make it out to the west coast last weekend. We headed out to Camble River on the 1st and fished the 2nd 3rd and 4th. Considering the time of year and location we did quite well, better than anticipated actually. Our main focus was not fishing for salmon but to do some prawning and fish on the side.

The prawning was excellent to say the least, jumbo prawns galore. Half to ¾ pail fulls for a 4 trap set were not uncommon. The only problem was my dainty little hands took a kicking cleaning them. By the 3rd day they were cut up and bleeding I honestly don’t think I could have taken another day of it. But in the end it was well worth it, they are tasty little critters for sure.

We a did quite well on the winter springs as well. We landed 7 fish between 2 boats, not bad for this time of year and really we probably only put in about 10 hrs of actual fishing over the 3 days the rest of the time was spent prawning and goofing around. The nephew and I you guys know him on here as Beak, put 4 fish in our boat all together. 3 in the 10 – 12# range and one shaker. They are tasty fish those winter springs with beutifull red meat. It was a treat to land a couple salmon this early in the season. If the rest of the season keeps up I can’t wait till my August run to Sooke.

Here are a few pics to enjoy.

Nice fish Walleyes. I'm jealous since I have'nt been out much this year and caught anything, even though my boat collection just this year has grown to a 26' Saratoga, a newly aquired 16' runaboat, 10' fiberglass lake fisher, 10' Zodiac, 16'canoe, and two needing repair and paint kayaks. Hopefully I can get out there sometime this week. Anyway how do you clean your prawns and get cutup? I usually have the wife help. She snips the tail with scissors passes them to me I take the head twist one way, tilt back and pull gently, this way it removes that ugly vein at the same time. I can usually do about 20lbs in about 1/2 hour. Good luck in Sooke used to live there many years ago and might try it this summer if I can snag onto an old camper for the truck.

Sweet pics were you north of campbell river? doesnt look like mudge in the pics.Giterdone never heard of cleaning prawns like that we just take the heads off and boil the backend they are easier to peel when cooked.

Well if you don't mind eating that gross little vein that's fine but I either boil them or put them in the fry pan with butter, garlic and paprika or scewer them and put them on the barby. Never had anyone ever tell me they were hard to peel but they sure are impressed when they don't see the vein. It does take a little skill but you catch on pretty fast. If I ever run into to ya out in the chuck and either one of us has some freshies I'll show ya.

Nice catch there walleyes.
Anyone knows if or where you can get prawns around Sooke?

Mmmmm....Beer and BBQ prawns....
cheers

[br]Campbell River is a nice place (I live there) but its definately not the west coast. Huge difference.

Its considered the west coast if you live in A.B. like I do.

Alberta, wow! Sounds like you had a really nice trip. You should try the west side of the Island some time. If youve never been there, its a sight to see.

Oh yah,, have done the Nootka thing a couple times.. Spent a week out of Cougar Creek couple years back, some awsome fishing in that part of the world. I have been going to the island for years since I was kid, been going out there for going on probably 35 years now know the country quite well actually. I consider the island my second home and plan to retire there some day when I am done drilling all the wells in A.B.

Hey walleyes looks like Twin Islands in the background, is that where you picked up the Springs?
