Bute Inlet

Heading out to "the bute" this weekend. Any one fished it recently? Don't want to know anything just if the springs are there and how bad was the algae bloom.

Sorry I do not have a report for you, Stuart Island/Bute Inlet reports appear to be very secretive. I'd be curious to hear how you made out as I was thinking of going to following weekend. Good Luck.

Do you know your way around over there?? I'm not so sure its secretive at this time of the year, there's just not enough people fishing for a decent report. I know of some being caught and I will try to find out about the bloom.

I usually don't get up that way until mid june. By then fish are showing and the bloom is done. I think we will be battling bloom for another month or so.

Thanks for the replies guys I know it's tough to get intel on the bute. Did manage to get a few reports from other sources who said the fishing wasn't all that great last weekend. Hope that changes. Last year the bloom was bad but we found some areas that were bloomless and they paid off good. I will post a report next week.
Charlie how's the fishing on your side of the pond been? I hardly got out this winter because of our crappy weather. Did manage to get a few though.

As I'm sure you know, you can have some excellent fishing if you find them this time of year. IMO if you don't have any action within a half hour to an hour then keep moving around as I think its as much about finding the bait as anything this time of year. Fishing the flood seems to be the better option when fishing in the Inlet in most spots. Good luck, beautiful spot.

It has been spotty at best. Know of a few being caught but bloom is no fun. Prawning has been decent and will be for a couple of more weeks.

I am envious. Used to live in PR till early 80's. Those Bute's were a magnificent spring. Looked like they ran into a wall at 30 mph. Like Columbians. But deep! Go luck!

A friend of mine just got back and the report was a few nice Springs and some prawns, beautiful spot love it up there, I will be up there first weekend in May if anyones going up then.

I was in there Tuesday ( Alpha Bluff ) for work The porpoises that were in Toba are now in Bute There must be a couple hundred.
I'm gonna start packing my down riggers, I haven't fished in Bute this early but if I do I'll post.

The springs haven't made it up the inlet yet. Orford north was dead last week. We fished Sat and Sunday down lower and scratched up a few teeners on bait.
Lots of porpoise which wouldn't leave us alone at times.
Prawns were bigger but don't forget the Carlyle like we did.
Nice place to kill a couple of days for sure.

Down lower? Fawn Bluff? Lawrance Pt? Log Dump?

You are correct sir.
And the outflow wind was bad on Sat. otherwise we would have spent more time up there.
Definately worth a rub down below before heading further up.
We had our prawn traps further up tho.

The fishing was great but the catching wasn't. We trolled for about 40 hrs and came home with 4 springs. Three 14 pounders and a 32 lb pig. There was no particular area where we found fish. We trolled both sides north and south of the orford. Four fish caught on four different hootchies so it was hard to locate fish and identify what they wanted. Stomach contents were 3 inch bait fish not sure what kind maybe small herring? Prawning was OK but we did not bring home our limit of 400 each. Too early or too late not sure which.
