Burnewiin Rod Holders- anyone using them?

Buddy has them on his boat. They are massive. I've got four of the RH5710 ones on my boat and they have been great. Only real advantage vs the 5710 is that the rod is more stable when you are cranking away in the holder, especially if you get their reel clamp accessory.

You can reel just fine with the rod in the 5710, but sometimes (depending on the reel), the rod/reel won't sit perfectly square in the holder. One thing I prefer about the 5710 is that you can tilt it all the way up which locks the rod in vertically and you can run at speed like this with the rod secure. The 6650 has a max tilt of 45 degrees.

In short, I would only get them if you plan to do a lot of fishing (and reeling) with the rod in the holder and want the extra stability.

I have two of the RH3740 model that I use for mooching rods on the downrigger and two of the RH5710 version for ling/halibut fishing.

I have found the RH5710 to be more than adequate for cranking up fish in the rod holder. I haven’t had any monsters yet but lings over 20 lbs and one oversized halibut this summer(estimated at 40 lbs) weren’t too much for it. It is great for guests and novices that have a hard time cranking a level wind without the rod turning in their hands. Because I use line counters as well on my bottom fishing reels I just have guests reel in the holder and pick the rod up for the last twenty feet or so for gaffing/landing.

My review of the RH3470 is mostly positive other than one small irritant: the notch in the bottom of the tube allows the rod to seat deep enough (around the reel seat) to allow contact between the spool and the rod holder causing extra friction in addition to the drag. I find myself pulling the rod out about 1/4” to avoid this contact. In spite of this minor OCD trigger I would never go back to putting the rod in the Scotty boom mount rod holder; that is now used exclusively for holding the release clip while resetting my gear.
