Braid or Mono on Abu Garcia 5500

I am planning to fish Sooke this July and am wondering if I should re spool my 5500 level winds to mono for trolling with down riggers this summer in Sooke? If mono what pound test? I would like to leave the braid on but I re spool if you think it is better with mono.

Ahhh... that's not exactly a salmon reel.

I used to fish Abu 6500's downrigging and that's as small as I'd like to go the 5500 would work with 30# Spectra and a short topshot of 25# mono but it'll be hellonwheels if you hook a good sized fish.

I've used hali reels the odd time for trolling deep and the braid works you gotta bury it in the clip though and with the braid you'll get way more line on- most guys just use those smaller reels for jigging though unless you american

I used a 6500 with 30lb braid and a top shot of 30lbmono on my old river rod for trolling. salmon feel like a freight train charging when you eliminate that mono stretch. Use a good long rod with some flex.

spool with braid and enjoy the fight. every salmon you play will feel much larger than it is.

I have high end Loomis rods so I feel good about using them for salmon.
