braid or mono ---not again

staying alive

Ok --so I have a couple of mint condition 5" Peetz that I want to put new line on for my trip to Nootka ---now the big decision 80# braid or 30# mono?? Am going 80# braid because its approx. same diam. as 30# mono and should stay in the scotty clips OK and also thought of braid to protect my peetz from warping from mono tighening to much.Do I need the 50' of mono leader on the braid?? Also how is braid for untangling from a cluster @#$%& with another braid or with mono. any suggestions would be good. Read a comment from SMILEY who put braid on a Peetz ,if your out there how do you like it?
Or if you think braid will be a pain in the butt I would like to hear from you. Trip is in 2 weeks and counting

Empty reels in Langley

Hello.

I run almost exclusively Peetz reels and love the feel and sound of them. I must admit to having a pair of levelwinds for noobs, and one GT2000 for my wife.
For the past 3 or 4 years I have gone to braid on all of them (this is approx 8 reels I think LOL)
Here is the recipe for setting up a 5" Peetz: do 1 wrap of the arbor with tape of some kind (I use hockey tape stolen from the kid) to stop the backing from ever slipping (learned this the hard way) then put 50 yards of backing on (shops do this for just a few bucks), then 150 yards of 80# braid (join with Albright knot - easy to do and super strong - see animatedknots.com).
Last year I wondered if the braid was spooking fish and so added a mono leader of 30-40# (again on an Albright) then Palomar to a pigtail swivel.
By the way, the braid right to the flasher doesn't seem to spook fish at all. Even hardcore trout fishermen are moving to braid.
There are a few other advantages to adding a leader though: I make the leader the exact length that I want from the flasher to the release and teach guests/kids to put the end of the braid in the release. It holds perfectly and yet you can pop it out by simply winding the reel, or a good tug - not like the bs you see kids/noobs doing with mono as it stretches instead of popping.
When stacking 3 rods per side the kid simply puts the correct rods out in order and the flasher distances are perfect to prevent tangling the lines of the rods above them. Add 10-15' of leader to each higher rod.
No problems with warping reels and the stuff is durable! Getting to where now I can tell when the gear is almost at the top since the most used portion of the braid is beginning to lose colour due to washing it so much.
The braid is more limp and at the beginning you will have more rod tip wraps than you used to; the trick is keeping some tension on the line when putting the line in the release but then that is a good idea with mono also!
The feel of a good fish on a Peetz/braid combo is unbeatable!
Last weekend my 12 year old brought in a 18.5lb spring after a good battle....on his garage sale 4" Peetz....so if he can do it I'm sure others can.
PM me for a telephone call if you want more help.
Smiley.

I like the idea of braid. A few times in the past during August when the fishing was hot and everybody is fishing large plugs off shore at 25 to 40 feet deep, I would put a plug on a hali rod with braid line. Talk about a wild fight. The feeling is very one to one. You can feel every move that fish makes and the thrusts of power are very impressive. I was shocked at the difference. It changed the fight totally to the point where I would be moving away and towards the fish in the boat with the limited space i had just to keep tension in the line. it was almost athletic. Braid line on a knuckle buster on a good fish would surely slap some fingers VERY hard!!!

I do not think this is for everybody and I think more fish would escape capture due to the lack of stretch in the line.

How long does braid last?

How does the braid hold in the release? What pound test can you get away with? Also, did you run the plug right off of the braid or put a mono leader on before hand. Thanks

good comments SMILEY --had to look up what a palomar was ------how come only 150 yds of braid ,,wouldn't i want at least 250 ---seems a shame to have that nice looking peetz with just a little bit of line . Agree with you on the look and feel of the peetz --they just look good on the boat----and the sound when you get a screamer unreal

I did have a 40# mono leader and the braid was 80# and held in the clip well enough I though,t but I do not think it holds as tight as 40#mono but it worked. I only did it a few times for kicks and it was pretty fun.

Unless you multiple rod and reels (i.e. extras), stick with mono, it much more forgiving in a fight with a big fish. I have multiple rods and only run braid when I fish below ~120ft since I can see a suttle hit (e.g. small cod) when fishing deep. Mono is the way to go, I feel I can feel really torque on a good fish while with braid I'm always abit paranoid during the fight since it has zero give.....knots can sometimes slip if your running a mono leader...........just my opinion.

I have used braid in scotty clips, but with thinner braid 30-50 I have leaned a trick in South Africa by twisting a cheap rubber band around the braid and pinching the loops in the clips. Then you also can use a shorter mono leader.
I agree the mono has better stretch and forgiveness. A soft rod helps.
I also found with braid there is way less resistance and seem to cut through weeds instead of dragging it along.
My downrigger balls are more vertical and is easier to bounce the bottom
