Bonkers

Yes, I probably am, bonkers, that is.
But, I need new one, and wondered what people use.
Round, square, oval, long, short, weighted, cedar, fir, spruce, or?
Looked at the ones in the store and either Made in China
mini-baseball bats, plastic, or far too light.
So, thought I would ask the experts.

Make your own. That’s what I did. Find a tree limb and carve it up to suit your needs. If it doesn’t work, throw it on the fire and make another one. There is plenty of material all around us. It also makes for a good spring project out in the garage. One rule to remember is cut towards your chum and not your thumb.

I use a good hardwood axe handle cut down to size with some grooves ground in for sure grip. The offset at the end of the handle hits home pretty good. eman

I have the Scotty gaff with a bonker on the other end. Two tools in one, very practical.

One of the members on this site uses a 2 foot long rubber pecker ...seems pretty effective.

Got a beauty I carved years ago out of cedar. Floats, wont rot. I marked a couple of notches on it so I can measure crabs with it as well.

My original was a real Judge's Gavel. Kinda light. But then a Buddy from the mill turned me a couple heavier ones of the same exact style out of very dense wood. One whack for salmon, and generally but one or two for hali's regardless of the size. Affectionately referred to as Judge Judy

I use a piece 750 MCM copper about 18" long weighs about 8 LBS works great!
