Boat ****

Yep, we are working the bugs out of the new boat before I move her to Port and Bamfield for the season. That was the boss telling me how to catch a fish....guess after all these years coaching her I got a dose of my own medicine. There have been some decent fish over here off Nanaimo and Nanoose. Definitely not as hot as my home turf. Just in the process of buying a floating cabin in Barkley Sound which will make life a little easier during the charter season for me. Hopefully I will have the boat in the water good to go for the season by Saturday. She is going into the shop Monday for a few adjustments and the 20 hour service. Then off to work, and a little break after that when I go up to the Charlottes.

Here's a picture of the catch of the day today - 25 pounds off Gerald Island Nanoose.

I'm test fishing a prototype reel for one of the large tackle manufacturers. The finished product will likely look different.

Once we have all the bugs worked out it will be on the market for around $200 +/- $50. I'm out trying to find any problems, and if we notice issues then we can get it 100% before it hits the market. They are only interested in getting it to market once it is 100%. There is no point going to market if there are issues. There have been too many Islander copies out there that were not worth a cent, so this one has to be perfect. So far it's performing well, and once we get come changes I suggested it will be tremendous.

What do you think of the styling and colour? Would it be better in a distinctive colour? Would you buy one at that price point once we get it operating perfectly? Tx in advance for any feedback.

A buddy caught a 33 pound chinook at French Creek today. That reel in the picture looks like a Normark product, perhaps the new Islander simile that Normark been working on since the "Mr.A.B." era. Mason

Looks sweet to me searun, I like the style. Especially if it's around the $200 mark. I use an MR3 and it's is sweet, but also expensive. When you think about having a couple rods, it would be nice to have some other less expensive options. But if it doesn't perform as well as an islander then I would be more inclined to spend the extra bucks on an islander or just buy a cheaper Shimano GT. Look forward to seeing the finished product. Can you tell us what company is developing this?

searun, please make them produce a model that is left-hand convertible like the MR3s. Then I am in for at least two!

Searun....I like the look of it. I am just contemplating picking up an MR3 but the price point you speak of is SO much more desirable, but as you say "provided it performs".

I like the silverish colour of it....although it's not as "distinctive" as the gold of an Islander. ;) Keep us posted as to how things go!

Oh....and nice fish!

Thanks guys, I spoke to the company guys today. They would prefer to keep a lid on the brand until we are good to go and hit the market with the finished product. The key is getting it right before its out there. Thanks for the feedback on the left hand convert, will pass that along. If anyone has any other ideas I'm happy to take those forward.

So far its a great reel, and feels similar to the Islanders I have (although the MR-3 is a much larger spool so quicker line retrieval). I would say if is performing well, but there are a few tweaks I would like to see such as a slightly different handle to improve comfort and feel. All simple changes.
