Binoculars

Just looking for a relatively inexpensive pair of binoculars for the boat. Anyone with any suggestions, the more details the better as I am trying to get them on the cheap and buy them online. Or heck anyone looking to get rid of a pair send me a PM...I am in Nanaimo and travel the whole island regularly.

I guess waterproof is one requirement. And the other is that they are clear.

Thanks

I have a set of image stabilizing binoculars at work, they are worth about $350 but wow they are worth every penny and then some. Haven't tried them on the boat yet but will be soon.

Don't buy anything over 8-power as they'll be too jiggly on the water.

Fogproof, waterproof of course. Don't skimp on price if you can avoid it. Mostly you get what you pay for.

I'm a big Leupold fan because of their unmatched customer-service; have one of their scopes on my rife and also a set of 10 X 50 Olympics I use for hunting etc. Nikon (Monarch's) are also huge punch for the buck.

Good luck.

X2 on power, the only caveat being width of field. If you can get a powerful pair with a wide field go for it. I have a powerful pair with a narrow field and they are all but useless on the water.

Same here. All my rifles are topped with Leupolds and I've got two pairs of their binoculars as well.

On 'Leupold Customer Service':

Bought my late 60's vintage Remington (700) 30-06' from an old retired hunter back in the 90's. It had a same vintage (60's) Leupold 4-power scope on it with a post-reticle cross-hair set up that I just couldn't get used to and decided to contact Leupold to see if they could change out the X-hairs for a standard set. I explained to them on the phone what I wanted to do and they said - no guarantees - but they would have a look at it to see what they could do. They told me to put it in a box and mail it down to them in Oregon.

I did.

About a week later I received a letter from them telling me they had received the scope and that there shop was looking at it.

About 3-weeks later I received my scope back.

The work order read:

- general cleaning and disasembly.
- install new front glass & back glass.
- rework windage butt.
- install new reticle.
- install new seal kit.
- reassemble, test.

Amount due: $0.00

Thank you for owning a Leupold product!

Fact is, there are several other companies out there producing better glass for the money; but for me, buying my hunting bino's was a no-brainer.
They are not top-of-the-line Leupold's, but I am VERY happy with them.

... Fact is, there are several other companies out there producing better glass for the money...

I concur with most of what you've said excepting the above quote. Leopold offers VERY Good Bang For Your Buck and in fact there are few companies out there that can match their quality for their price. Especially so for their higher end products.

Had a similar experience regarding Leopold's Customer Service. Hot Loading for the 300 Weatherby had a couple of negative results - one burned out barrel (OUCH!) and they actually shook the crosshairs free of their mounts in the older Leopold scope (White Ring - late '70s issue 3 - 9 x 40). Can you say RECOIL?

Sent that scope off to them while the new piece of Belgium Steel was being fitted to the action. The scope came back extremely quickly, completely rebuilt and looking damn near new! They noted they had seen but an extremely small number of this type of repairs, and wanted to know what type of CANNON I had it mounted on! LOL! Scope has functioned as advertised ever since...

And I don't make the loads quite that Hot any more... :D

Cheers,
Nog

Okay Nog, you got me. Poor choice of words.

Should have said... "There are several other companies out there producing good glass for the buck, but..."

On Leupold Customer Service - there is no argument!
