Hey guys, I'm hosting a 1st annual fishing derby this coming weekend and will have about 12 guys in 4 boats. We're gonna fish for the full day on saturday (at least until the nucks game) and half day on sunday.

Wondering what the best format should be for the derby. Anyone have suggestions that have worked well? We'll all good buddies so it doesn't matter how we split guy into boats so perhaps we do some sort of draft with captain and picks? Each boat will have 3 guys so need to decide rules on prizes for biggest fish, most keepers, most weight, etc.

I host an annual salmon derby for basically a work party. Here is how I have set up the rules in the past (they seem to change every year).

"Here are the tentative rules. These could change a little, but for the most part they should be adequate.

1) Derby date - _________________
2) Fishing boundaries are up to the boat owner local rules - (marine areas 8-2, 9, 10 are open for four fish - area 8-1 is only a two fish limit)
3) Prepaid entry fee of $5.00 for each angler
4) Everyone fishing from each boat will be entered in the derby (to determine boat average)
5) Drawing to be held for boat seating placement to determine what boat you fish in
6) Depart from any launch site (determined by boat owner)
7) Available boat space/ seating is up to each individual boat owner/operator
8) Start fishing any legal time on (deby date) (determined by boat owner/operator)
9) Stop fishing time 2:00 pm sharp
10) Meeting time 4:00 pm (+/-)
11) Meeting location for fish weigh-in/BBQ is at ____________
12) Entry fees to be used for:
A) Prize for heaviest individual fish,
B) Prize for heaviest boat average per angler, split among anglers from that boat example1: Boat A - 3 angles, 10 fish - 3 div by the 10 fish total weight = avg catch per angler in Boat A example 2: Boat B - 2 anglers, 8 fish - 2 div the 8 fish total weight = avg catch per angler in Boat B
13) Salmon species - ____________ only.
14) All anglers must abide by (WDFW) state regs for saltwater/salmon fishing.
A) Single point barbless hooks
B) 4 fish limit per angler (Areas 8-2, 9, and 10 - 2 fish per angler in Area 8-1) - no more than 2 (two) Coho and/or Chum (of four fish limit) may be retained
C) No min size limit
D) Lifevests available for everyone on board boat
F) Saltwater fishing license and catch card is required (catch cards must be filled out immediately after boating each fish before you return to fishing)
15) No store bought fish will be weighed
16) ALL fish will be weighed in at the weigh-in site. Fish not weighed in at the weigh-in/BBQ (rules #10 & #11) will not be eligible for prizes

We were planning on a pot luck style BBQ, I'll bring the fish. _______ is in charge of the BBQ afterwards, so please get in touch with ________ with what you can bring. Keep in mind there will be 25-30 people attending."

Alot of this may not apply to your area, but it could give you a rough idea. Its always fun to do, but almonst too much work.

If you were giving a prize for boat combined average then it might be fun to have an auction the night before for boat placement with the procedes providing the purse for the prize.

I agree biggest fish should take all/most. May have a small prize for most keepers for a boat as well. Maybe they get their money back?? and the biggest fish get the rest. Saturday will probably be start at 6am and be back at the dock by 4pm (in plenty of time for dinner and nucks game 2) and sunday will be 6am start until 2pm for the final weigh in.

I agree that the biggest fish should take the majority for most derbies. This derby is mainly held to get people out fishing who don't have the opportunity to fish too often. For most who participate, this is the only time they get out for the year, and some of them have never fished before. Splitting the $ in this way gets them more involved in it.
