Does anyone have any suggestions of where is the cheapest place to buy tackle. I just spent over $1000 at Nikka only to findout that I could get most stuff cheaper at other stores. They had a good selection but where expensive.

Really??? Well other place in Richmond would be Berry's Bait they are good guys, or I guess you could go to a Canadian tire/Walmart, but you won't get any help at either of those places. What kinda stuff was expensive vs other places? Or just as a whole[?]

You dropped a grand and never asked for a discount?[V]

The net is full of deals if that's what you want and there's always Wal Mart....

I agree.... most of those places will give you a discount if you are making a big purchase. Never hurts to ask... even and extra 10% helps put a bit more gas in the boat :D !!!

thanks for the info. They were really expensive for Berkley power baits tails, weights, some scotty stuff. Nice thing is that they have alot of stuff that other don't have. Will look on the internet good idea.

I was in Nikka last week spent a few hundred asked for a discount and was given 15% off and you could not beat the service. The guy who served me, I forget his name, (he guides up at rivers inlet sometime)was awesome and gave some great advice especially for the west coast.
The cheapest place is not always the best, cheap means cheap wages for the employees if you want cheap go to China everything seems to come from there these days.[V]

When I lived in the Vancouver area, I used to shop at Nikka quite regularly. At that time, I found that they were probably the cheapest tackle dealer in town. If I spent $200 or so, I could be sure that I got the cheapest price on almost everything I bought. A couple of items might be a bit more than I could get them some place else, but overall it balanced out in my favor without all the running around.

As far as service is concerned, they are second to none. Calvin and the guys are great to deal with and when they have time can tell some pretty good fish stories.

I have shopped everywhere and everyone has been great except "Berrys" while they have a great selection & OK prices after helping a budy gear up with over $1k of gear I mentioned a discount and the response was "do you think this is a charity". I would have been OK with no, sorry but being made to feel small by somebody who's probably always been a bully makes me really not want to shop there. Just avoid the big loud guy if your buying anything and you will get good service.

My #1 choice is nikka for quality if your setting up kids with cheap tackle or don't have much to spent be sure to check out arm & navy downtown, cheers

Yeah, that big loud guy gets on my nerves a little bit too. I used to shop almost exclusively at Berry's. Last year, when DFO closed Fraser because of bottom bouncing, I came in and that guy was swearing like I've never heard before right in front of a dozen or so customers. You know, the usual stuff - they are all f***g morons, natives don't deserve to live, that sort of thing. I pointed out to him that they had a whole wall of bottom bouncing goodies and that if they didn't want the river closed it would be smart not to sell that stuff. Well, let's just say that I found out a lot of new things about myself.

Stevenson Marine in Vancouver does not carry a lot of tackle, but they often have wicked deals. Halibut jigs and Berkley grubs for 1/2 price of what i saw anywhere else. Don't expect any tips or advice there though.

If you ever need to buy bulk stuff(think swivels, hooks, snaps, spoon blades, etc), online is the way to go. I've dealt with http://www.luremaking.com They are in Ontario I think. Great service, great product, very fast delivery. For $100 I made myself enough spoons and spinners to last a lifetime.

Cheers

If you like Ebay some excellent deals can be found on tackle. Do a search for a company called Supertackle on ebay. He sells salmon and hailibut gear at very cheap prices. The shipping is also very reasonable. He is located in Nanaimo. Check out his prices at his online store.

I newly moved to Nanaimo. Any thoughts on the best shop in town for service etc?

If you're not in a hurry, you can find stuff on sale. The stuff you use all the time buy more when its on sale.

I go to bellingham once a week for work. Joe's down there has something on sale all the time. One week it was Coyote's for $3.50, Another week Flashers for $6.99, and I picked up a 30lb thrust Minkota Endura for $69.

I like Steveston Marine on 3rd. I stop at berry's every time I drive by and usually buy something or other, the 'help' factor and the 'bluster' factor are variable.

The "best" shop is that new place on Broadway I think. Great staff, if a little pricey for some things. I think the service has been improving ever since it opened. I stop in there and buy a thing or two every time I drive by and can find parking. I'm thinking of upgrading to Islander reels, and that's probably where I'll buy them.

Fishin' anywhere anytime for anything

If you want the best tackle for the lower westcoast of Vancouver Island try the Crab Shack in Sooke at Jock's Dock or Trotac Marine in Victoria.:D

On this side of the border, it is pretty hard to beat Nikka for price & selection. I live on the Island & a bunch of us go as a group once or twice a year to re-load on gear at Nikka. If you want to go to the other side of the border, I would suggest Daves Tackle shop in Lynden. Great selection & prices. Also, if you want to venture a little farther south, Sportco in Fife has just about everything. They will do mail order as well. As a bonus, Gamakatsu's western distribution warehouse is located just down the street. If Sportco doesn't have your hooks, then the Gammy warehouse probably will. Excellent prices on 100 packs if you are looking to buy in bulk. If you keep going down south towards Lacey, then there is a Cabellas, as well as a Sportsmens Warehouse there.

Ebay is also worth checking out. There is a seller there called the bookpile. He has a great selection of coho & steelhead jigs at pretty good prices. I think it is 6 jigs for 5 bucks & a couple of bucks for shipping. I just bought a bunch of jigs from him, & they look great. He will also tie custom colors for you. Can't wait to try the blue/purple combo for coho this fall!! Hope this helps,
Regards, SS.

Screaming Fish and Fly in Nanaimo is a good place to go. Good prices and service bb
