If time and money were no object, where would you go on the BC coast for a self-guided, self contained three-week salmon, bottom fish, prawn and crab fishing holiday?
Fish the entire West side of Graham Island up in the Gwaii, theres some unreal spots to fish and some of the inlets up for anchoring up are stunning and untouched. Either use Masset or Sandspit/Charlotte City for fuel... or both. Easy to get yourself a nice small deer while on tour too!
west side of Graham island not a bad option at all. You will get all sorts of fish there (probably just anchor up off freeman . I"m not so sure about prawning and crabbing in that area but I've hear of others doing it. The central coast (Milbanke area) would be another strong contender IMO... a lot more sheltered as well.
Hi Hublocker. I would take stock of how you plan to fish out of the boats you have available (troll from the small boats, drift fish from the big one/whatever). I would consider the age & physical condition of the trip members. I am 66 & have been doing this stuff since I was 35 & have seen age greatly reduce my enthusiasm for getting the crap beat out of me.
I would then take a look at the web sites for various lodges on the coast & find some locations where what the lodges are doing closely matches your capabilities. To me a fishing skiff means some sort of small open boat while the skiff used on commercial Seine boats is a whole nuther thing. I have fished the Graham Island area 4 times. I would not consider it small open boat territory. Some of the lodges use 18-22 ft open boats & issue you about $1K of insulated foul weather gear upon arrival. If you go to this area make sure the skiffs have great radio/gps/bildge pumps.
A few days at River Inlet coupled with some stops in higher catch rate area's might be a good option. Dungeness crabs seem to prefer Ell grass estuary area's. Not sure about prawns. The waters between the North end of Vancouver Islan & Rivers Inlet should offer bottom fish
