Best campground on the island for MAy 24.

I wanna go camping with the wife and baby for the first time. Kid is almost 2. We would like to rent a tralier as the wife isnt much into tents.

Where would you go with my current situation? I want something somewhat out of the way, preferably family orienated, minus the 19-25 old party animals.

Ever been to the Green Point Campground (Long Beach) in Pacific Rim National Park. I don't think the park would allow party animals. As with any camping weather is always an issue. Lots to do in the area. May can be a nice month if you hit the good weather on the West Coast, no fog.

I think you will want to be able to plug your trailer in. With the wife and little guy try Pacific Playgrounds. Walk the river or the beach. Store close by if you forget something. Don't rough it to much if your selling it to the wife.

I am told there is an outfit or outfits around Parksville that rent RV trailers etc. all set up on prior reservation in that very nice Provincial Park Rathtrevor just south of Parksville. No worries about towing repairs, tires, etc. I would guess a google excursion or maybe one of the local members could help out to locate these services. Rathtrevor is a very nice park and in may you should still be allowed a nice campfire in the big cedars listening to the ocean in the evening. Good for kids and others.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I am thinking something a bit more rustic then what has been mentioned. is there anything north of Campbell river or off on a logging road somewhere to the south? I want out of the city.

Hey Lorne,
Rent from this guy right in your town.

I bet you won't find anyone cheaper.

I would try Nimkish Lake as a possible destination. It used to be upkept by Canfor. We used to go there every summer in my windsurfing day's. Beautiful Lake that you can drink out of (the water is tested every year). Nice communal firepit, picknic tables, outhouses, and sometimes firewood. There is the little Houson? Caves near by (very cool and a must see) and Port McNeil is about a 1/2 hour away for supplies etc. You can go into Telegraph Cove for a day trip and see the old board walk and the newer blastmafy of a development on the other side lol. You can go to Zeballos as well. There is some trout fishing in the lake itself and the many surrounding lakes as well.

Anyway's it's and option for ruggedness camping. It's free too.

Cheers,
John

Yup, I grew up in Abbotsford... now when I go back I lock the car doors and keep my head down...

Id start by camping in the back yard.. then you can bail when the women start complaining, grab a beer and watch the hockey game... Just a thought... lol

Thats where all the best camping is! Only thing is thats May long so unless you can get out on the wednesday/thursday you might want to find one that will take a reservation. I camp every May long and its crazy how fast spots fill up. The best ones are gone by thursday night with family members who dont have to work that go and hold spots. Mind you I never camp in ones that take reservations or have and attendant but I know they do fill up.

Best thing to do is buy yourself a backroads map book. Best camping investment youll ever make.

You can fluke out and get some good spots but head out asap on friday. I know they logged up to some of the pimpest spots on the lakes up there.

Ill pull out my book and give you a few suggestions. I would not suggest that pacific playgrounds. If you want saratoga beach there is two smaller rv/cabin sites down the rd that are way better.

Hey Lorne lots of great camping at some of the lakes north of Campbell River, small remote places like Grey Lake, Brewster. Morton Lake. Have a look at one of the backroad atlases.

if im not mistaken pretty sure the boy scouts take over that campground may long. but if you have daughters lorne they might not complain.

how big is this trailer you want to get in?

Hey Lorne,

Just curious when (year, and your age) you lived in Windsor?

I'm a born and bred Windsor boy - been out here about 20 years.

That's right. It's the first really busy camping weekend of the year. I used to always take a day or two off before long weekends just so that we could find a spot if we wanted to camp on a lake. Your other option is to reserve at a commercial campground which really isn't camping and you get charged an arm and a leg to do so.
Now, on the May long weekend we just jump into the boat, head out the Canal to Barkley Sound and stay at a friends float house. No reservations or crowds to deal with and the Columbia Chinooks are heading by.
Agree that the majority of really nice "remote" camping spots are Campbell River and north.
