Hi There:

Things were slow the first part of December so my wife and I left the old homestead and did a drive-around Vancouver Island for a week. We travelled from Victoria to Port Renfrew, then across to Duncan and then up the island to Port Hardy and then west to Holberg. I had wanted to take a look at Winter Harbour but that 50 kms. to Holberg was enough gravel road for that day.
Could some of you folks tell me some stories of why I might want to fish the Winter Harbour area? The locals in Port Hardy seem to think its a pretty good area. To get my boat over there would be quite a chore as it is in Bella Coola right now. I would probably run down to Port Hardy and then rent a trailer to take it to Winter Harbour. Haha whats a little boat gas when you're on an adventure.
Thanks,
Den

Logisticly, it's a long ways to go. I had a friend who lived in Holberg, so we had a place to stay. It's a lot of rough gravel to drag a travel trailer/camper and a boat.
You have to take everything, because there's not much up there.

How big a boat do you have???

On a nice..really nice day:) you can run from PH to WH on the outside. Otherwise land in PH, rent an trailer and launch at Coal Harbour, 13 k away, then it is ~30 mile run to WH by water in a reasonable calm inlet. You would need to pack your boat with everything as there is a small store and gas station there.

There is good fishing all over the area from PH to WH, so unless you really want to see some different country, PH is a good place to fish.

Cheers

My boat is a 24' Searay. I have fished the Port Hardy area in the past. About the only piece of water I haven't tried is the Winter Harbour area and south of there towards Nootka. The mid-coast has been our area for the last 9-10 years. Hakai, Milbank Sound, Seaforth etc. Did someone say St. John's is out of business? We see their resort boats out just about every trip and the float planes coming in and out of the lodge on a very regular basis? I wonder what happened?
As in other areas the mid-coast is suffering from a lack of Salmon. Last season wasn't a complete disaster but it was far from what it used to be like.
