The newly released Nootka DFO fisheries maps showing allowable areas to fish in Nootka do not correspond to the Write -ups-For instance the area around Strange Island is shown as fishable but the writeup says it is not-after July 15th. Last years map showed this closed. There are a few other examples-check the write-ups-plot them out on your own maps and avoid embarresment and a fine.

Thanks for the heads up! If there is a discrepancy between the pump and the till, the customer pays the pump price. In this case, is the map or the write up the law of the land?

After July 15th is it not the waters in a line across the entrance to Tashis Inlet that is closed. Is not the hmmmm..east and south end of Strange Island open after the 15th? There are markers located across the line I mention.

It was last year, as of many days there was a city of boat lights in the early morning after the 15th, mostly lodge guide boats and I don't think they would fish in a no fishing area.

I was there a few mornings starting around the 24th...but as the boats increased I moved to another spot and had it almost to myself each morning for the rest of my stay. To bad that the inlet is no longer open...that used to be my favorite inside spot to fish at daybreak till about 7am. Its beautiful down there with the steep slopes, bear on the beaches, deer and super glassy water. Customers really enjoyed it too.

The 2 para's below are what I first noticed-they clearly seem to be open on the map and I got excited because it was one of my favourite places to fish and was out of the wind. There are other examples. If it was closed last year-it is closed this year-The monument appears to be open this year and there is also an adjustment to the wild coho retention over by the Burwood shore. Looks a little larger.

That portion of Subarea 25-6 northwesterly of a line from Boston Point to Salter Point (Kendrick Inlet) is closed to fishing for all finfish from July 15 to October 15. That portion of Subarea 25-4 northwesterly of a line from Salter Point to Hoiss Point is closed to fishing for all finfish from July 15 to October 15. By the way Salter point is the southern most tip of Strange Island

Yes that is from the Area 25 DFO web site and at the top of the page it states:

"Area 25
EXPECT IN-SEASON CHANGES!

The closures and restrictions described in this Area may be varied by Fishery Notice. These management changes and additional openings and closures are indicated in red on this page."

And on the same page you will find the new 2012 maps which state:

AREA 25 – NOOTKA SOUND

within Nootka Sound are open to the retention of two (2) chinook per day with a minimum size limit of

shore of Nootka Sound to the surfline. (steel blue area on map)

Effective July 15 through October 15 the daily limit is two (2) chinook, only one (1) of which may be
greater than 77 cm:

Sound and bounded in the northwest by

1. a line drawn between a boundary sign located on Nootka Island, directly NW of Bodega Island,
at 49°44.962.’N and 126°38.006’W to a boundary sign on the opposite shore of Tahsis Inlet at

(pale blue area on map)

Effective January 1 through December 31 the daily limit remains two (2) chinook with a 45 cm
minimum size limit:
_ northerly of a line from Hoiss Point to San Carlos Pt on Bligh Island then following the Bligh
Island shoreline easterly to a point at or near 49°39.732’N and 126°28.815’W then to a
boundary sign on the opposite shore of Hana Channel at or near 49°40.181’N and
126°28.166’W excluding Hisnit Inlet, Head Bay and Nesook Bay.

(inner dark blue area on map).

FINFISH CLOSURES
Effective July 15 to October 15 the following waters will be closed to fishing for all finfish:

Tahsis Inlet northwest of a line drawn between a boundary sign located on Nootka Island,
directly NW of Bodega Island, at 49°44.962.’N and 126°38.006’W to a boundary sign on the
opposite shore of Tahsis Inlet at 49°44.966.’N and 126°37.588’W
(pale oranges coloured areas on map)

If I read that right, it is not closed at the bottom of Strange Is, like it was last year but open to the top of Bodega Is

Forgot to add this:

From FNO450

Please note that effective July 15, 2012 north of Estevan Pt. (Areas 25 and

26) , Chinook Conservation Measures will be implemented. These measures will

include salmon non-retention areas and finfish closed areas in Areas 25 to 27.

DM-I have gone over fn450- which is a coho notice and I cannot find the specific write up you are quoting above. It appears from what your write up says that it is a description of the chinook map. We have to be very careful here because on the web site it couldn`t be anymore clear than a total finfish ban as I stated in my last entry.- from the south end of Strange Island up Tahsis inlet. Hope we can get some clarifacation here as it is far from clear what are the legal areas.

DM I believe you may be correct-I hope this notice does replace finfish closures and I would advise everyone to carry a map with the write up on your boat. Thank you for bringing this up-it is indeed quite a departure and a welcome one at that. Watch this space!!!!!

Near the bottom of the FNO450 page just under the "offshore area" and above the "Notices"

DM I have charted it out and have copies on the boat-good spot-I think you are correct and I`m going with that!!!!
