Is pretty weird how this played out. Our past rental would have lump payment due of up to $600-700, but our anniversary was June and they just hammered the heat during a bad winter. This is only a couple months into winter so for them to get that far ahead of the monthly payments seems pretty odd as that shouldn't run up in the summer like that.

While sad for the family in general, as FA says, its really their own fault. If you actually looked at your bill, you would see the deficiency building month after month and would have known it was time to prepare. Assuming it was your household and not a hijack, you make the adjustments accordingly...stay ontop of kids leaving on lights, keep heaters down to 66 or 67 and wear sweaters. Whatever is needed to be done. Timing sucked for sure, Hydro a big dumb jerk about it, but it could have likely been prevented. Good reason we have as little possible with hydro! Hate those guys as much as BC Ferries!

just read the original article...

"But the family was blind sided by this bill"

BS....unless a grow show tapped in and chewed up the juice in the last 2 months, that is crap - it is clearly outlined how much you have consumed vs how much you have paid. I hope there is more to this.

Sad that some people have trouble just keeping the heat and lights on in general, but to state to media that they were 'blind sided' I think is pathetic (once again, on the assumption that the power wasn't suddenly stolen!) They should have seen trouble coming at least 4 months ago and started to prepare.

Well thank god none of us was ever young and nieve about these things. always had fat wallets and union jobs. like I said I deal with BC Hydro on a monthly basis and they are the most unforgiving cold hearted bastards alive. having said that I loved working with the line crews. start at 7, have a meeting, go for breakfast and start work about 9:30. it was awesome and the consumer paid for it because everyone was on the clock..

its not about hydro the corporation - they surely deserve the xmas scrooge label they get in general, but I have a serious problem with people coming out to media to cry based on their own stupidity and apparent inability to read a bill and see future consequences in that bill. See it coming and can't pay, sure present to media that they need help if they so choose, but to state you were blindsided??? THAT'S what's BS to me.

I do find it curious why hydro didn't up their payment way earlier though...they never had a problem asking me for more money each month when my past tenants consumed like pigs! Oh well.

I thought grow show as well, but the kids can chew up a lot of power. I was also under the impression that hydro can't turn off the power after November, thats why they cut that old lady off in fanny bay before the cut off date. Hydro is one hell of a heartless corporation and if this bunch of crooks in Victoria lets them get away with it. What can you do?;) eman
