Bamfield or Thrasher/Nanaimo this weekend?

Trying to decide if I should head over to Bamfield this weekend to Salmon fish or fish Nanaimo/Thrasher Rock area.

Normally it would be a no brainer and I would go to Bamfield but the reports for salmon sound slow in Bamfield right now.

Anyone hear anything recent from either area?

Bamfields alot more fun to fish in my opinion. Shallower fishing, chance at hali, amazing scenery and better chance of the fishing lighting up. ECVI is ok but far from lights out right now. Lots of guys getting skunked.I have heard of 4 big fish this year but in general they are small this year. 8-15 lbs.

coho....

Haven't heard too many reports about Thrasher from people running over from the mainland on these forums.

You may want to call Bob from this charter service. Seems to be a decent guy from when I met him before.

If you ask me.......the WCVI vs Thrasher is a no brainer.;)

Well..this is a tough call depending on what happens....but....if you play your cards right, you could have limits on board from Thrasher by the time you're getting close to Port Alberni...or....??????

Fishing isnt nearly as hot in Nanaimo area as people are playing it out to be. 95% of the fish are small and its very spotty compared to last year. The West Coast is getting better everyday and it would have to be blowing pretty hard for you to do better on the ECVI right now. Ive had a few good reports from the past week or so from Bamfeild area. Either way I'm sure it will be fun:).

I take it you've been out fishing the heck out of the Nanaimo area recently ChromeSweetChrome? It'll save a lot of people some $$$$ this weekend if it's really that bad--we'll all fish elsewhere.

I'm not saying its bad at all but its not hot like alot of people are saying. Some days are decent with some boats (people that know the area)getting 4-5 fish but its really spotty so you have to get lucky to hit the schools. Also the seals in the area are REALLY bad this year and it seems like its a 30-40% chance one of the bastards will take your fish if you hook one.

The winds dont look too bad for the west coast sunday, monday so my money will be spent over there. Also doesnt hurt when I get a few good email reports with some nice pics from over there.

Aye Captain, Aye!

not sure who "alot of people" are but I'm pretty sure I could go out there and find the school, it's not as hot as last year, but when has it been like that in recent memory, there are still fish around just in different areas, if you go fish the cannery right now you could probably limit easy unless they've moved on in the last day, I actually saw the nanaimo guide that everyone thinks is embelishing handing of two large bags of fillets to his female client the day that people may be questioning, there aren`t as many, they aren`t as big and they aren't in the same place as last year. having said all this I'd go to Bamfield too, the west coast is the west coast, but I've just posted a couple reports of fish on here in the last few days, and I think I've been the only guy reporting fish so I hope I'm not getting called out, otherwise I'm not sure who these "alot of people" are.

Like i said before you can go out fish hard all day and if you are one of the better rods you might get 3-5 smaller fish off nanaimo. If you find the fish over on the westside and the bite comes on it can be lights out. Exactly a year ago we caught 25+ legal springs in a day over bamfield although it sounds like the fish havent shown up yet.

Look at the storm that just passed.. There are a pile of fish sitting off of Uki and Tofino from what I hear.. Might stand to reason those fish may have been pushed back up towards the Nootka area..
As for the E.C.V.I., the storm of fish that usually pass the Nanaimo area in the latter part of may just got pushed over to the Sunshine-Lasquiti area with the strong S.E. Nanaimo needs a few days of 25+knt N.W.winds in order to have them move into the usual haunts like Orlabar(spelling?) to Entrance areas.. Hope it helps..;)dirty

Easy limits at the Cannery?? Good luck with that! Wasnt calling you out Kris and the "alot of people" that I was talking about are the average Joe in town that hears a rumor and spreads it until the next thing you know its "easy limits" in Nanaimo;).

sounds good CSC, the fishing is spotty we fished for hours on tuesday, up the beach from the can buoy to neck point, out in the deep water neck point to the fingers, when the wind died a bit pulled up and headed back to entrance but didn't make it, because we got a nice one within ten minutes at the cannery, got one out there saturday too and lost one as well, a buddy of mine got two out there saturday as well, seems like they are stacking up there just thought I'd help every one out hopefully get some more good reports up here, and we didn't see any seals up there, did see an orca tho
Dirtdog you been fishing? I'm often looking for a fishing partner pm me if your getting the fever.

I'm not sure who you were talking to on WCVI BUT, from what i can see most of the fish must have been thinned out by the trollers. I was averaging 15 to 20 hookups a day last year at this time and now it's 5. I've had a few Ukee operators that i know calling me to see if we are getting them - hoping for more coming :(

On Tuesday (the last day we could get offshore) there were 11 trollers at Portland Pt and we got 3 Chinooks and were the lucky boat as most of the charters got blanked. Hardly hot. [xx(]
