Bamfield or Thrasher/Nanaimo this weekend?

I'm not sure who you were talking to on WCVI BUT, from what i can see most of the fish must have been thinned out by the trollers. I was averaging 15 to 20 hookups a day last year at this time and now it's 5. I've had a few Ukee operators that i know calling me to see if we are getting them - hoping for more coming :(

On Tuesday (the last day we could get offshore) there were 11 trollers at Portland Pt and we got 3 Chinooks and were the lucky boat as most of the charters got blanked. Hardly hot. [xx(]

Crap!! :(

Although the overall return of Columbia River fall chinook is forecasted to be higher than last year, catch quotas for chinook in the river and the ocean will likely be low because of the poor Bonneville Pool return and restrictions needed to protect wild salmon listed under the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA).

While salmon forecasts are up overall in the Columbia River, coho and chinook returns to Puget Sound are expected to be slightly down this year.

A few individual Puget Sound coho stocks, including the Skagit and Stillaguamish, are expected to return at low levels and will require additional protective measures this summer, said Pat Pattillo, salmon policy coordinator for WDFW. The overall summer/fall chinook forecast for Puget Sound, where wild chinook salmon are listed for protection under the federal ESA, is 222,000 fish, a slight decrease from last year’s forecast.

- the americans are hoping that a fair number of wild salmon make it back to spawn, the trolling pressure by Canadians is supported by Columbia hatchery and has no regard to the dwindling wild salmon returns all across the board from the fraser to columbia and puget sound river systems.

Hot reels.

Well..just heard a report from a local operator who had, as of 11 am , put 2 in the box, lost 4 to seals, and lost 2 other fish. He's still out fishing! That's not bad (especially with rookies on the rods)...if the furballs weren't swimming around his boat, he'd have plenty more on board. Sounds like there are some fish around...and when I hear of people getting lucky "to get on the school" I think that a few anglers reports aren't necessarily something to go on...again..your results may vary! ;););)

See ya out there tomorrow!!!

:D

Thats why I have an email group of about 10 local anglers (some of which have fished here for 20+ years and some that guide on this side daily) giving up to date reports, not to mention I'm out there 2-3 days a week myself. I said that some lucky boats are getting into 4-5 fish a day and near half the fish are getting sealed, so I'd say my report would be pretty good wouldnt you? Glad to hear your freind got into some fish.

Ok. Cool. We may be on the same list. Anyways, update from this afternoon..the boat I mentioned earlier finished with 3 in the box. Another guy was fishing over there and finished with a couple of nice keepers....bite died by mid morning. Not too bad for guys who aren't fishing over there daily.

See you on the pond!

Fished out of poiler pass a few years ago and had the same problem of seals. Took the clicker off the reel and didnt ring the dinner bell for them, seemed to work. Hope this helps as it is so frustrating to loose a nice fish to these over aboundent pests. Bob

While i agree and applaud your sentiment i would suggest just doing it and not broadcasting it on the internet. Good luck fishing.[8D]
