Bait for Halibut

Bait for Halibut.

When it comes to Halibut Fishing I am a newbie.

When I have fished with others they have used pieces of salmon and octopus and whole Herring. So far Herring seem to work the best.

I am going out tomorrow in a friends boat and am going to add Halibut belly skins with a little meat/fat on it. My friend says this will work. I thought I would ask others if they have had much success with Halibut as bait for Halibut.

no it is not a good bait salmon belly strips are. catch a pink salmon first and use some of its belly or buy one at grocery store TR

Salmon bellys, herring, mackeral all work well.
only problem using bait is when dogfish are around.
when doggies are a problem, try a powerbait grub or whole salmon head.

Rockfish , I've used haly skin for bait and done well with it, it's also tuff and stays on the hook well.

Nice to know that halibut skin will work as bait. We added it to a herring yesterday but it was a straight Herring (sometimes inside a big glow hootchie) that got us Halibut. So far in my limited experience (five times Halibut fishing) all the Halibut have been caught on straight Herring which so far is out fishing Salmon, Octopus and Halibut. I have seen hits on Salmon and Octopus but no fish in. I have even heard that chicken skin with some fat on it has worked for some.

Found a whole spider crab, a whole prawn and something that looked like maybe octopus in the belly of a hali that I caught on a herring this weekend.

They eat a pretty wide variety.

Tips

Herring seems to be the all around "go to" bait, and I've certainly caught my share with them. One day, last year me and a
buddy were fishing out of Pedder Bay and things were slow. We tried everything when I finally put on a big chunk of a
Polluck that I had picked up in a prawn pot a few days earlier. No sooner had the bait hit the bottom and bam,I had one.
Brought that one in and released it as it was only 10-12 lbs. Rebaited with Polluck again and sent er down. Meanwhile
my buddy's ribbing me and sticking to his herring/ octupus combo, sayin that won't happen again. No sooner than the
words come out of his mouth and bang, another hali for the Polluck. This one turns out to be a decent 30 lber.My buddy
still can't beleive it and sticks with what he's got on,so I bait it up with the last chunk of Polluck left on the boat and
fire it down again, telling him the next one's his. He laughs and says he dosen't need my charity. Well,I bet no more
than 10-15 mins. go by and there's another one on the Polluck. I laugh and hand the rod to him and after a good battle
it comes to the boat. A beauty fish that weighed in later at 65lbs. I don't know what it was about that Polluck that
day,but man was it hot!!
