Anyone catching any small shakers while fishing winters

Hey,

Just wondering if anyone is catching any small (< 12") shakers while targeting winter springs in the strait of georgia or around southern VI. Just interested if any of these little guys are still hanging around and if so where. (From a research point of view, I do not have a thing for catching tiny salmon)

Cheers

got one last time out on the Vancouver side of the strait

I don't fish there...but I know where to go in local Vancouver area waters where you can catch them one after the other, another, another and another...

They are around....

Thanks Guys,
That's interesting info.......

Fish Assassin: I have talked to DFO guys who felt that when we have great inside Coho years (such as back pre mid 90s or this last summer) it is because the Coho leave the strait in their first fall but come back in the following spring (as bluebacks) and then spend the summer in the strait. What you are saying would suggest that last winter the Coho hung around in the strait over the winter.... What time period and what areas were you catching small coho? did it last all winter?

Fishin magician: Similar question.... are they juvenile Chinook you get around Vancouver? What are the smallest individuals you see at this time of year? Do they stick around all winter?

Appreciate people's insights..... The reason I am interested is that I am a grad student up at UVic (when not fishing) and I work with a group who are involved in juvenile salmon research.

If you were catching them as you said , "one after another after another after another after another , " WHY? did you not move out of area or change gear?
HMMMMMM?????

I got the impression from fishin magicians post that he was aware of a location where there are lots of shakers but that he avoids fishing there "I don't fish there....."

Regardless, I appreciate this information..... is anyone seeing shakers around the Victoria or Sooke area? The sport fishing community is a largely untapped resource of on the water observations that can be very valuable

Small coho.... Lots were clipped. Started in the fall and we watched them grow till adults. They were being caught well into Oct.

Alot less this year in Sooke then years past in my opinion. Most of what im catching is chinook over 3 pounds. only one coho shaker yesterday in a 5 hour effort.

Shaker was about 10" and caught at 169ft in 220 ft of water. Also got 2 chinook around 3 pounds both at 184 ft in 190ft of water. No keepers. Have heard its been decent though!

Because he and I have a history on this forum and he's a crusty old commercial fisherman who invited me down to his dock to discuss his beefs with me. The thread had a snake taken to it.

Anyways, I don't fish in the shaker nursery around Vancouver and when I happen to be trolling by I usually use offensively large lures and hooks.

There are many Coho and Chinook shakers around Vancouver from 6-12 inches. The Coho juveniles were quite prevalent 2-4 weeks ago from what I heard.

predominantly juvenile chinook. in recent years we have found the odd Coho shaker.

Juvenile Chinook stay around all year...the winter seems to have the most. August has been brutal at times the last few years...little ones from 9-12 inches. They readily hit 6-7 inch Chovies at that time of year.

THanks FM... Sent you a PM

Late September-October from Beecher Bay towards Constance Bank/Albert Head. If you were not fishing on the right tideline, they were a nuisance when looking for coho. We had to check out lines constantly and keep pulling the lines and moving deeper to avoid them. There might have been coho around, but it was hard to even get the gear down.

Hey All,

Still looking for input on this one. Mostly interested if anyone is seeing shakers after the fall months (from December on) and if so, where they are running into them. PM me if you have info,

Thanks

Last time out......I think 2 weeks ago we got a couple of small shakers and this was along the West Van shoreline. Will be out this Saturday and will update you Bugs if we see any.

had one pretty small guy off Gambier/Grace a couple weeks ago too
