Anchovie Availability this Year

I have heard from a very reliable source that there is a shortage of Anchovie again this year. Then again, a Gold River resort owner says they have lots.

What is the story? Are there or aren't there?

Heading to Gold River last week of July, and getting pretty anxious.

Just checked in w/ Berry's. They claim to have chove's in stock, according to their website. Price seems somewhat steep. I have heard people having a harder time finding them. Charter outfits usually stock up well in advance.

It was about five years ago and things were opposite. No frozen Herring to be found for a couple seasons in a row. Then everyone converted over to the Anchovy. Might be time to swap again (?).

There are virtually no large anchovies to be had in the Victoria area. I was using sardines last weekend which are a little larger. They didn't work out for me but I think the fishing was generally off in the area I was in so it wasn't a true test to see if they were fine or not. There seemed to be some packs of the little anchovies around.

I know there was a shortage last year, and I didn't want to go short in Hardy and Renfew this summer ...so about 10 days ago I went to Berry's Bait and Tackle and bought all of their large chovies: almost a full BOX, about 25 packages. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

PS: The folks at Berry's had doubts about getting any more this year so perhaps people should buy any large chovies that can still be found.
