Alvey reels

Anyone use these reels or have much experience with them? My father had a really old one in a box in his basement. My father in law uses the larger diameter ones for his halibut fishing as he hates having his rod "upside down". He seems to really like them and say's it's like a power winch bringing up the flatties. I have never used one but some of the smaller ones look like pretty good reels for trolling etc.

This one kind of caught my attention.

I have 4 of the 425 saltwater fly reels. I think they are a great alt. to the $ alum. reels.
Used them lots for the last 4 years with no problems except for the odd person who can't keep their fingers off the large drag wheel
They have 7 layers of drag washers kinda like a small clutch pack on a motorcycle which provide a huge range of drag

Thanks for the reply. Good to hear they are working for you. I find there reel's quite interesting.

X2. I have one of their side casting surf models (the stainless version). Picked it up because I honestly couldn't believe the incredible casting reports they had received. Well... Guess What?! They work even better than advertised! I can literally toss the smallest of offerings right across the Stamp damn near anywhere, with accuracy! Kind of a novelty to me, I only used it enough to satisfy myself it was everything they said it could be on the fresh water...

Also tried it in the chuck. Works quite well, and the drag is very very nice! Landed springs, coho and sox with it No Problemo.

These days it is pretty much a Shelf Queen. I prefer the center pin when on the river, and the Islanders in the chuck. So, if you want to Try Before You Buy, shoot me a pm - I'll gladly let you play with it for a spell to see if it might suit your needs...

Cheers,
