Derby In Doubt?

There is some doubt once again surrounding the salmon festival this year. YES Only 43,000 chinook est !!!. That's less than the half the average return over the past 24 years, which is 104,000 chinook. Federal fisheries is looking for 34,000 spawners which will leave a catch of only 9,000 allotment . The Labor Day weekend derby had to be cancelled for conservation reasons only once in the past 35 years.this could be the next .

Compare last year terminal fishery where we had catch allotment of 23000 for FN ,COM and SPORT , and of the 57,000 run only 12,000 spawners were recorded of the 34,000 needed , ~~~~ So if you think last years Alberni inlet fishery was bad , don't even waste your time !!!! that's only 9000 between FN and sporties TOTAL [xx(]

Amazing what the bag fleet can do to a run [V]

The seine boats were in there last season the predeeding weeks before the derby. It is not rocket science why they did not get enough spawners to keep the run going.

True Rob ~~~ DFO over estimates the run size continually which allows the CATCH to qualify to over harvest by all sectors . It's Based on science but with a different goal in mind $$$$$$$$ .

It's sad to see Alberni chinook fishery is about gone!

I am hopin' that DFO in area 23 has a chance to rebuilt the chinook runs again. Or else, I would have to go all the way to Ucelelet and fish offshore for US bound chinooks...costing some gas money. The weather is the main factor on the west coast[V]

Its about time to adopt some farming (but not fish farming) principles to fishery management and allow the brood stock to reach the spawning grounds before opening up the fishery.
Right now its all by guess and even DFO will admit predicting returns is not an exact science.

If they, and we, are not content to hold off until minimum spawner numbers are on the beds, then they could hold off the opening until 1/2 or some portion are counted and hope the rest make it in later past the fleet.

Easy enough to do on a fishery like the Alberni, admittedly harder on a system like the Fraser.

That will never happen!! It makes way too much sense and is way too logical.

The whole way the fishery was managed last season was a scam. DFO knew the run was going to be small, and at last minute to help keep the peace they opened up a commercial fishery by upgrading the run by 9,000 fish which then allowed them to run a commercial fishery on those fish. Not surprising...after all it is the Department of Commercial Fisheries.

Here's the real scoop Ladz. The local FN's informed DFO that were they not to realize a commercial opening on springs, they would fish them intensely 24 - 7 for the duration of the run, in effect killing them all. In order for the FN's to see any commercial fishery, the door has to be opened for all commercial sectors. DFO ran scared of the FN's as usual, threw the doors open, and the carnage is history.

This year's very poor predictions are the direct result of 5 years of loosing the bag fleets (FN's included of course) in a Hell Bent For Leather terminal fishery that has all but wiped out the Alberni springs. No wonder as to why what so ever. Amongst those atrocities was the high-grading of hens by Jimmy's seine fleet last year. Following each opening, large numbers of dead males were floating around everywhere they had fished. Unbelievable unless the real design is to destroy the run once and for all.

And, now when the sockeye get up to 600K, the intent is to fish that intensely before it has any possibility of returning to it's once glorious status of well over a million returnees... [V]

Unknown - I'll be needing a few of your decals. [}:)]

Nogg if what you said is true and i do believe you somebody's heads gotta roll that almost made me puke.

Least we NOT forget that ALL egg takes are down 25 % for cost savings at the hatchery ~~~never mind the less than adequate escapement # 's ~~~~We are Now reaping the rewards years later , but nobody publicizes that. ~~~~
