Interesting question...

Interesting question Wolf. I hope that your friends do get some good advice and have a good experience.

I've guided a few Alaskan Cruise customers who have done the cruise and then come out fishing in Vancouver after. In each case, they went out for a guided full day or half day of fishing in Alaska and didn't have too many great things to say about the "catching". For all the marketing the Alaskans are churning out about how good the fishery is....my guests all reported slow or poor fishing. I've done 4 such charters I can remember over the last 3 years.

One family spent a day on the water and said they only hit Pinks. 5 pinks for a family of 4 on an Alaskan fishing trip?. Wowsers..I was shocked. No Chinooks, No Cohos..just pinks. The other families all reported skunks on the chuck.

Needless to say that made me even more determined to put some nice fish in the box. On any given half day charter inVancouver, you definitely have your work cut out for you. I'm fortunate to say that I sent each of those families out with Chinooks and/or Cohos in the box.

I hope your folks get into some good fishing and the Alaskan product lives up to the marketing.

If your guy ends up in Sitka, this is one of the best:

High end boats and electronics, good guys running them who know the area. Sitka is one of the top areas in Alaska for springs. If Sitka weren't on the chart, you guys would be catching way more springs then you do---it's a catcher's mitt and a killing floor for big chins

I do know what you are saying Fishin magician I too have had the same complaint with simular reports and the captain even saying NO PINKS on my boat and shook everyone of them off.
.Other group i had said the halibut was amazing as fast as the rod went down abother chicken then it became boring??? WTH LOL LOL and lastly had to go with a group of people they didnt know 10 quests on 1 boat....

this is why i asked the question as I dont want my friends end up with one of these types of trips...

thanks guys

I spent a couple weeks in SE Alaska fishing last June....I fished everyday with www.bellamisty.com Good guy (Clayton) and great boat...(except for the short rods and levelwinds) His partner Jim has a sweet boat as well. There should be the odd chinook still around in July, although it is primarily a June fishery right in Ketchikan. After that it is pinks and coho. He is pricey, but he will run a couple hours to go to where the fish are. If you book an all day trip you can fish Cape Chacon....which is across from Dundas Island. We spent some time fishing there last year and it was smokin fishing. It is a couple hour run from Ketchikan though.
