Wow! My girlfriend and I were out today sailing and she wanted to try fishing on the great blue sea! Well did we get a surprise or what?! She caught her very first fish and it turned out to be a SHARK! Being that we are both very new to fishing, I called the place where I bought my rod and they were very helpful. Just want to give a big shout out to the Harbour Chandler for being so helpful. Thanks guys

usually bait attracts dogfish. not too often dogfish will grab a jig but it'll happen. can be a pain sometimes. if you're getting lots of dogs you might want to try a different location. to get salmon using jigs like your doing, pump the jigs up as fast and as high as you can and let them drop with as much slack in the line as possible. when it runs out of slack pump or lift the rod as fast as you can again. the faster the better, then let fall again. it can be alot of work, but that's what works for salmon. as much action or speed as possible. you'll usually get hits when it's flutterring down under slack. if you feel something abnormal or it seems to stop falling, lift rapidly to set the hook... drop right to the bottom, jig like that a few times, then reel up 5 or 10 feet, and do the same again, work the lure to the surface so you're checking the whole water column.... the more erratic and quicker the jig is bouncing, moving or flutterring the better. guys that work hard at it will catch the salmon...

Sometimes you will foulhook a dogfish while you are jigging.....their skin is tough and it can be a bit of a job getting a barbed treble out.

You want to watch out for the spine in their tail and dorsal if you are getting the hook out of a live one.

They are pretty smart and will flip the tail spine right at your arm or hand if it's in proximity.

Be careful...you don't want to get punctured by one of their spines.......not nice at all.....
