A question about Backing for my Islander?

I was telling my girlfriend I wanted to get backing for my new islander reel, so there was some under the tree for me how did she do? 30 lb x 100 yards, should do the trick no? after all the discussion about monofilament and having backing I think this is probably exactly want I need on there, question 2, what is the best knot for tying the two together, Albright knot?, nail knot? , any help would be appreciated, I am going to pick up new 30lb mono and save the 40 for a jigging rod.071.jpg

Nail knot is what is used normally in all the years ive never gotten down that far to it...with backing you can get close to 300 yds(900) ft of line on most reels even with 100yds of backing BENEIFT of backing you dont use as much mono hence change it more often....

Excellent, thanks Wolf, I always change my mono twice a year anyways but the whole backing thing is new to me. 30 lb ultra-green has always been my go to line. Also quite comfortable with the nail knot now after takin up fly fishing this year, Mikep suggested the Albright knot but I think I need an engineering degree for that sucker :p

You change your mono twice a year? I could understand if you used it everyday but I don't think that's necessary but it a personal choice I guess

I also run stainless steel downrigger cable.. im weird I guess, when it starts to get weathered I change it out, nothing worse then loosing a fish & tackle to a knick in your line, usually by august its time to switch it out, personal preference I guess:p

I do it twice a year as well, you are definitely not weird lol

I change it at least 3 times a year beginning of the new season for winters(jan), then june then beginning of Aug the amount of weeds jellyfish, sticks all other junk in the water etc I dont wont to loose a fish from me being lazy or too cheap to change the main line its probably one of the cheapest things to change. Plus with the way these lines break down in UV as its getting worse every year as the sun kills it and knowing i can put the boots to a fish with out worrying is money in the bank.
EVERY june I see guys snapping of soooo many fish because they dont change their lines and see many a fish dragging a flashers behind them for the cost of it ill change the line.

Changing LINE, cheap = success (could be that 50 lber)
NOT changing ine = LOST fish

Do whatever you want

I run 3oo yards of 50# braid with a 100ft top shot of 30-40# mono,I find the improved albright knot with 15 turns holds great!....
change main line every 3-4 years...change top shot every few weeks in the busy season!
