Thanks for that wstcoaster, I'm here to learn and I appreciate getting pointers. It's been a steep learning curve for us newcomers to the Island. Now can you tell me where I can jig for herring in the fall around these parts? And dah...I should have known... I kinda thought the filets were looking a little slim, as I compared the flesh to the store bought ones, so plump. Oh well, we'll still enjoy the smoked ones tonite in tom sauce. Cheers.

While generally wstcoaster is correct about the lower fat-- imo they still taste like herring! Over the years i have made some fine pickled herring from roe herring. Give it a try and decide for yourself. Using roe herring is a bit messier however as the milt and eggs tend to stick all over everything they touch!

Eat the roe , its fabulous.....squeeze the herring and the roe sack will pop out , you can brine it lightly , then break it open and soak in a wasabi soy lemon mixture and eat it on sushi or crackers....hmmmmm yummmmmy.... use the carcass for crab/prawn bait.
get your rollmop herring from the herring sale near xmas...its cheap and proceeds to charity.
enjoy ..

And where in the Comox valley do they have a herring sale??? Just asking............
