They're coming into the docks on ice and weighing heavy on the scales! The last week or so the Ucluelet Salmon Ladder Derby has seen monster Tyee's weighing in over 40lbs...and these are just the fish caught by derby participants!
The biggest fish recorded so far this month was a 49lbs-9oz chinook caught about 8km off shore Ucluelet on the south west corner. They were trolling an atomic spoon at about 40 feet when the line went out. 35 minutes later it was on the boat...now Roy Dawe, the fisherman who caught the fish, might claim the $7000 first prize for August in the derby.
The top 5 fish caught in the Ucluelet Salmon Ladder Derby are all over 45 pounds. Last year the biggest RECORDED fish caught in Ucluelet was 51 pounds. I'm really hoping someone brings in a 52 pounder.
