I dont know if they tuned in or not but can tell you I was in cancun at a resort for the first game and we all went to the sports bar... id say there was 60 canadiens there and 2 groups of american (12) maybe one guy was being a beak and was doing his "trump game " until my buddy said lets see how you survive is we cut the power and the water to your "great " country.. he was like what ya mean ... he had no clue ...then my buddy hey how ya going to rebuild LA with no lumber??? it was quite entertianing to watch... needles to say they left the bar they had zero intrest in the game...Did non-hockey fans in the US tune in because of the nationalist aspect?
The sailing forum I frequent had many first time hockey game watchers for the final.Wondering what the NHL thinks about its creation this morning. Did they get the TV ratings they hoped for? Did non-hockey fans in the US tune in because of the nationalist aspect? The final was a thing of perfection, tightly matched,l with no controversial calls - the near-mythical "players refereeing themselves" that almost never happens in ordinary league play.
I'm in two minds about the Four Nations concept. I love the thought of dumping the pointless, lightweight all star weekend in favour of real hockey, especially the one-and-done format with everything on the line. But OTOH, the four nations is the NHL trying to dilute the Olympic tournament which is hands down the best hockey on the planet when players from all leagues are present.
the NHL all star games are an unmitigated disaster. You got Mitch Marner Miami Vice skits and guys shooting at surfboards. just absolutely terrible. players have been screaming for best on best tourney for years. they got their wish and delivered big time.Wondering what the NHL thinks about its creation this morning. The fact that they are so evenly matched is what makes it a great rivalry. Everyone played like it was game 7. Lots of talent and lots of pride on the ice. You call it phony? I call it awesome!!I don't think last night was a test of Canada's superiority in hockey. US Hockey has been very close if not more or less equal to Canada for some years. We lost the World Cup to them in 1996. In 2010 Canada similarly won the Olympic Gold in OT. Canada doesn't consistently win the world juniors though we have won more often than any other nation since the Soviet Union was dissolved. The rivalry in Women's Hockey is long and intense.
I enjoyed both games though I thought the US played with noticeably more grit and intensity. It was certainly a pleasure to see Connor McDavid score the game winner. Personally I don't think much of these NHL organized 'phony' tournaments. The league is worried more about it's bottom line than an honest display of hockey talent. I thought the US could have drawn more penalties for some chippy actions than none at all. However Canada's power play vs them was not impressive. I am glad they won and hope next year they get a better chance to show what a team of our best can do. Perhaps the coaching staff will retool the roster and develop a better game plan to beat the US and other contenders.
I agree about it being an awesome game and series. I wonder if the result had been different if the US had their best offensive defenceman in their line-up?The fact that they are so evenly matched is what makes it a great rivalry.
