25 years ago in Sooke

I remember that episode from years ago. Was living right in Sooke at the time. Was on the water almost every day that
was fishable. I remember seeing you out there alot as well, coop. Have to scratch for them a little harder nowadays, and
nowhere near as many tyee's,but still a lot of fun. Those were the days!

And look at the size of boats that Gary and Rollie fish out of today. A wee bit larger. The hair a wee bit shorter and fewer.

Hey I'll trade the rest of my hair for my next larger dream boat, a 33 Ocean Sport! That show was sometime between 1989 & 91 when I had a 17 Double Eagle. Bought the Seasport in 1992.

I watched that episode from a rented VHS from Van Isl. Video here in Nanaimo. Thanks for posting coop. I have only seen Rollie at the halibut seminar a couple of years ago. I don't think he has aged that much ;).

Great vid :).

Ha! I just met Rollie a couple months ago for the first time only diff I see is he got a haircut LOL
Coop you look pretty young there too, wow thanks for sharing, Great Vid

Those reels loaded with wire weighed a ton. I never fished wire in Sooke, but remember it from some very early trips in Brentwood before the grandparents bought property at Gordon's Beach. For me it all started in 12 foot beach launched boats and countless hours pounding Otter Point with the few die hardy that were there all the time. Some still are today.

Small world, I started fishing with Rich a few years ago and still do to this day. I've gained a lot of good skills and technics watching and listening to his stories. Thanks for the video that was cool to see.

Hey Gary and Rollie, should you guys still like each other maybe its time for a new episode? Would like to see if you two can still catch fish together and who is the better fisherman! All your experience should give you enough interesting chat material during slow periods. Not that great fishermen ever have slow periods lol!

very cool - back when the fishing shows actually fished. No resorts paying the way or sponsors demanding they use only their lures, actually fishing in local waters.

Great video, thanks for sharing. Always keen to see some fishin history!

X2 for the beach and 12 footer.

I started in those days and fished with my dad, Alec Merriman and his son along with Rollie and a few others. I was lucky to get the bug at an early age, and was out fishing off the beach at Otter by myself at 11; every morning before school and all summer long as we had a cabin on the beach there. Fishing, crabbing and exploring was my life. Between my dad, who taught me the ways of the ocean and to respect her and Alex, Rollie and a couple others, I learned to fish salmon and put that drive and love into my blood.

Alex showed me the old "meat line" fishing, hanging a heavy line off the back with a couple snaps to the lures and rubber bungies to take up the shock........along with the Peetze, steel wire, 2x4 rods and Abe and Al flashers. It was the best years growing up, would never switch it up for anything.

Then only thing I regret is not knowing how to fish hali's back then.....we tried but all we caught were ling, tons of rat fish and a few skates. If we only knew back then what we know now.......

Thanks for bring back the memories.

Cheers

I enjoyed that very much! Thanks for sharing Gary. Who knew we were fishing the Strait of Georgia? :D

Sitka, what cabin did you have? I hung out quite a bit with Richard Steed back in the cabin days. They had the cabin beside Jumbo Davies. I often visited Alec & Taffy Merriman looking for tidbits of fishing info. Alec is still around but haven't seen him for more than 35 years I bet. Frank Frost passed away recently, he was one of the high liners from the Tugwell beach area and one of the first to fish Sheringham Pt regularly.

Hey Rollie,
Did you ever meet Russ Heathman out at Otter Point? He was my uncle and lived just on the east side of the trailer park at Otter and fished the point on a daily basis. I have fond memories fishing with him in a 12 foot aluminum with a 5hp outboard. He always used herring strip in a minnow teaser head. He would trim the strip down to fit in the head. He also used a chrome Pal No.3 flasher and a 16oz weight.

Anyone know John Connolly or his family. He fished Otter regularly and lives in the waterfront, just past the trailer court. It was a summer cabin though.
