A buddy has a 20ft Trophy with a 175 Mercury on it and at present has an aluminum 14x19m prop. He wants to get a Stainless and was wondering if he should go with the 14x19 or does it change going to Stainless. Thought maybe someone out there would have a similar boat and could comment.

Thanks in advance

what are his max rpms right now? it will depend on that. He may also want to go 4blade for better mid-range performance.
as a rule of thumb he will drop about 200rpm for going 4 blade and about 100 for going stainless, but again completely dependent on the the boat and engine. he can probably find a prop shop tyhat will let him try the prop before purchase

Interesting situation.....todays technology in stainless props is much different. YOU GET what you pay for. All props are not equal and just because it's stainless steel doesn't mean it's necessarily better. Your results may vary, but I can say that I moved to a speed prop on one boat, retained the same pitch, but it has a HUGE rake and I gained 3 mph at WOT fully loaded with MASSIVE differences in handling, fuel economy and cruise speed. That prop set me back $450 (it's a $900 prop) and was worth every penny---it included the hub as well. I would recommend maxing out the RPM capabilities of his engine.I believe if it's a 91 or newer 2 stroke top RPM is 5900. The 19 pitch is probably the right pitch for that boat...if he's getting 5500 a step down in pitch to 18 or 17 will improve things...especially out of the hole. That's a heavy boat for that engine. I would recommend getting your prop from the US as it will save you BIG. Mercury Props definitely have a great selection TAILOR made for your motor. Brunswick Marine knows your motor and boat best. I would say though...and recommend that you stay away from the old Laser and Mirage Props as they were great for their day but you will lose HP due to how heavy they are and the newer alternatives are lighter. With the stainless, regardless, you will also "clunk" into gear on shifts and may experience prop rattle at idle depending on your hub choice (dependent on prop selection). I would also recommend staying away from the "low cost" stainless options. Stay away from the 4 blade on your boat, it'll probably cost you fuel economy and speed on your boat. However, there are benefits to the 4 blade depending on your use.

high five

I had a 94 20' trophy and upgraded to an efi 175 merc ocean pro. I tried 3 & 4 blade stainless and aluminum but the one I went with was a high five stainless five blade prop. It was by far the best for a quick hole shot, I would cruise at 35 mph at around 3500 Rpm and the top end was around 45 Mph and it turned on a dime.

what do you want to do? offshore and loaded you definately want to push the boat more... i changed out my prop that worked great for local running around with light load high speed at WOT,,, gave up the 45mph, for 35mph and got better mileage in rough water because i wouldn't lose plane when slowing down due to water conditions,,adjust to what your use will be...
