1997 Mariner 250hp

My new to me boat came with a 97 3 litre Mariner 250 HP Offshore EFI. If anyone has experience with this motor please share, goods (I hope) and bads. What will I need to look at, worry about etc.?

Mercury motor good solid unit to my knowledge.

Do the standard. Compression check ,bottom
end oil etc A friend of mine has the 150 hp. Runs good but burns lots of gas.willyd

We have done that, before buying, checked out. Have never had an outboard so am a bit nervous. My son is mechanic so should be able to do most work, tune ups etc. Just wondering, as said nervous.[?] Thanks.

they do tend to run a bit smokey.
