Humpback Bubble Net Feeding

By Legacy Lodge, 🕔Thu, Jan 8th, 2015

While salmon fishing for coho and chinook at Legacy Lodge in River's Inlet, BC, a father and 2 daughters came upon a Humpback bubblenet feeding. Humpbacks practice an unusual feeding behavior called bubblenet feeding (also known as lunge feeding), in which a whale captures a large school of herring. The whale blows bubbles around the herring school to keep the fish from escaping, and help bring them to the surface. Once the fish are at the surface, the whale lunges upwards with it's huge mouth wide open and gulps as many herring as they can.
